Professor Yong Sang Chung, an emeritus professor of law at Dongguk University, was appointed as the 9th Secretary-General of the Northeast Asian History Foundation by the Minister of Education and took office on August 8th. The newly appointed Secretary-General, Yong Sang Chung, graduated from Konkuk University's Department of Law and earned both his master's and doctoral degrees from the same institution. He began his academic career as a professor in the Department of Law at Busan University of Foreign Studies in 1987 and has served as a professor at Dongguk University's College of Law since 2007. He is currently an emeritus professor at Dongguk University and the president of the April Society, a non-profit organization.

 

In his inaugural speech, Secretary-General Yong Sang Chung expressed deep gratitude to President Jihang Park and the members of the foundation for welcoming him as part of the organization. He emphasized the importance of establishing democracy through a correct understanding of history and addressing the divisions and conflicts of our time. Chung highlighted that history education is at the core of democratic education. He also stressed the need to prevent historical distortions in the Northeast Asian region and to strengthen South Korea's diplomatic standing through cooperation and integration.

 

President Jihang Park expressed her confidence in Secretary-General Chung, noting that his extensive experience and background make him a valuable asset for the foundation. She assured that he would rejuvenate and further develop the organization. Concluding her welcoming remarks, she expressed hope that the foundation would take a step forward as a leading institution in "Northeast Asian history and territorial research and policy," with Secretary-General Chung playing a pivotal role in this endeavor.
