On December 12, the Northeast Asian History Foundation held an academic conference titled Exploring the Current Stage and Future Tasks of Goguryeo History Research at 10 a.m. in the foundation’s 11th-floor conference room to commemorate the completion of the 10-volume Comprehensive History of Goguryeo series.
The Comprehensive History of Goguryeo series began writing in 2018 and was completed after seven years. The entire series is structured based on the characteristics of different periods and the importance of archaeological materials, consisting of two volumes on early history, two volumes on middle history, three volumes on late history, two volumes on archaeology, and one volume of a general introduction. The focus of the series was aligned with consistent criteria established by the planning committee. Rather than the traditional approach where individual researchers were responsible for writing specific chapters, the committee discussed and developed a detailed content structure and writing guidelines to create the manuscript.
Goguryeo history has been one of the fastest-growing areas of Korean history research. By actively utilizing early records from the Samguk Sagi, new directions and methodologies were explored in Goguryeo history research. Research topics have diversified, particularly in the areas of political history and foreign relations, yielding significant results. Additionally, in archaeology, the introduction of Goguryeo archaeological materials from China and increasing investigations into Goguryeo ruins in the central region of the Korean Peninsula south of the Imjin River have contributed to meaningful findings related to Goguryeo’s history.
This academic conference was held to review and summarize the research achievements to date, assess our current understanding of Goguryeo history, and identify remaining tasks and new research directions. The focus was on "thorough organization of research achievements," "presentation of historically consistent understanding," and "introduction of new materials and scholarly critique of Chinese perspectives, offering a coherent understanding."
The publication of the Comprehensive History of Goguryeo aims to provide a thorough compilation of the significant research achievements in the field of Goguryeo history for both academic and general audiences. It is hoped that it will serve as a guide for those new to the research and a valuable resource for those interested in uncovering previously unknown aspects of Goguryeo.
