In August 2005, the Korean government released all diplomatic documents relating to the Korea-Japan Diplomatic Normalization Negotiations (the Korea-Japan Conferences), as a result anyone can have access to these diplomatic documents held by the Government which used to be categorized as secret. In mid-May, 2008, for the first time, the Northeast Asia History Foundation published 5 volumes of ‘Annotated Diplomatic Documents of the Korea-Japan Conference’ as ‘Northeast Asia History Document Series’ 8-12, in cooperation with the Institute of Japanese Studies, Kookmin University. We expect that the annotated documents, made up of 5 volumes totalling 4,200 pages, will attract wide interest and response among academics and teachers at home and abroad, diplomatic authorities and officials, and the general public.
The second volume included annotated documents relating to the Peace Line [Syngman Rhee Line], the question of Repatriation to N. Korea, Preliminary Talk for the 6th Conference, and Claims against Japan. Publication of a series of these diplomatic records will consolidate the authority and dignity of the nation and also will contribute to the clarification of the Korean Government’s legitimacy.
