This book explores the perception and understanding of Dokdo in the U.K., France, Germany, and Russia, traditional European powers that are no less influential than the U.S. in the international community. The co-authors of this book, experts in the contemporary history of those four countries, strived to maximize the synergy of their collaborative work while trying to avoid writing the kind of isolated chapters that often result in a lack of coherence in a co-authored book. In the four papers titled the perception of Dokdo in the media of the U.K. France, Germany, and Russia, respectively, the authors all attempted both quantitative and qualitative analysis of Dokdo-related news articles reported in the major media of the relevant countries.

Today, when Japan is politicizing its claims to Dokdo in the international community, this book, by providing information on how major countries in the world perceive Dokdo, is expected to serve as a specialized academic reference for establishing strategy to promote Dokdo in the international community as Korea's own territory both historically and substantively.
