This book has been produced on the rock painting sites and the images drawn in them in the eastern part of Kazakhstan which were jointed investigated in 2009 by Northeast Asian History Foundation and the Institute of Archeology under the Ministry of Education and Science, Republic of Kazakhstan. This book has a significant meaning in that it introduces rock paintings of pre-historic and ancient periods in the west of Altai Mountains for the first time to the Korean academia and also a joint investigation and cooperative research system has been established with the Institute of Archeology belonging to the Ministry of Education and Science, Republic of Kazakhstan.
Each image in rock paintings is like a memory chip that stores the spirits and material cultures of pre-historic and ancient humans that cannot be found through documents. Because through these paintings it is possible to study various subject matters collectively such as society, culture, religion and rituals, world view and plastic arts in the ages without writing symbols. Northeast Asian History Foundation hopes that rock paintings by humans since the Old Stone Age will help restore the natural environment of the relevant area, the development process of humans and the area's exchanges with surrounding region. The Foundation also hopes that this book will encourage more studies to be conducted actively on the succeeding and universal nature of Korean nation's culture within the broader cultural zone of Central Asian character as well as on the regional peculiarity of the Korean culture.
