Various records about foreign countries and other races in traditional Chinese official histories have been defined as 'Records about Foreign Countries' by Northeast Asian History Foundation, which then has been translating with annotations the entire records about foreign countries in an order since 2007. Between 2009 and 2010, records about foreign countries in 『Historical Records』 through to 『History of Northern Dynasties』have been translated with annotations in two stages and published into 12 volumes. In 2011 records about foreign countries in 『Old Book of Tang』, 『New Book of Tang』, 『Old History of Five Dynasties』 and 『New History of Five Dynasties』have been translated and annotated into 6 volumes.

While Chinese kingdoms included abundant records about foreign countries in their official histories, neighbouring countries and races failed to leave sufficient amount of their ancient historical records reflecting their own views, which in many cases have made those neighbouring countries restore their histories based on Chinese official histories. Therefore, it is important to correctly understand and study the 'records about foreign countries' in order to understand histories and cultures of East Asian countries in the premodern periods as well as the international relations in East Asia at various levels including Korea-China relations. The project also aims to understand the thoughts on which the records of Korea-China relations were written in Chinese histories in their descriptions about foreign countries and races.

It is the first time ever that the entire 'records about foreign countries' in Chinese official histories have been systematically translated and annotated both in Korea and abroad. Northeast Asian History Foundation's translation and annotation of 'records about foreign countries' will not only make the Chinese source materials more readable but also provide professional knowledge about various countries and races in East Asia, so professional researchers will be able to expand their research areas and raise their research levels, and the general public will understand histories, cultures and exchanges of East Asian countries.
