In Remembrance of a Beautiful Farewell Party Braunschweig in Germany, located between Hanover to Berlin, is a small city with churches, a city hall, and other beautiful buildings constructed during the Middle Ages. I visit this city often to go to the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research for my annual research project and academic conferences. There was a special international symposium at the Institute on May 4-5. The symposium was in commemoration of the retirement of Dr. Falk Pingel, who had worked at the Institute as a researcher for 26 years from 1983 and served as the deputy director for 16 years thereafter.
Active Academic Exchanges: Northeast Asia's Future is Bright On April 22, BING Zheng, Director of the Jilin Academy of Social Sciences, visited the Northeast Asian History Foundation. A memorandum of understanding was concluded between the Foundation and the Academy. After the signing of the MOU, Bing presented a special lecture on academic exchanges and cooperation. We met with Bing after his lecture. Q. Please tell us about the Jilin Academy of Social Sciences. Founded in 1958, the Academy is an organization for the research, management, education, and promotion of social sciences located in Jilin province. The Academy is also the only research organization in Jilin.

Gift: Search for the Inconvenient Truth I am always impressed by Japanese television dramas. The unfolding of the storyline is remarkable. The same goes for the diversity of subject matter. Every episode, whether it is the 10th or the 11th, is complete unto itself. The sequence of events in every episode is closely-knit, without a single unnecessary scene. The 1997 television drama Gift, starring Japan's popular star KIMURA Takuya, is no exception. The ending did seem somewhat loose considering the intensity of the events that had been building up to the dramatic climax.

100th Anniversary of Japan's Annexation of Korea: New Beginning in Historical Research International Conference at the University of Hawaii, Manoa Revisiting Japan's Annexation of Korea 100 Years Later An international symposium on "Personality and Politics in Japan's Annexation of Korea," co-hosted by the Northeast Asian History Foundation and the University of Hawaii, was held on April 23-24, 2009 at University of Hawaii's Center for Korean Studies. There were eight presentations by five scholars from Korea, two from Japan, and one from the United States. There were in-depth discussions along with the presentations. The symposium was attended by professors from the University of Hawaii--CHOE Yong-ho, KANG Hee-woong, Jon Van Dyke; Korean students from UCLA; and other students and faculty interested in Asian and peace studies.

Goguryeo/ Balhae: Correct Understanding for Proper Defense Association of Koguryo Balhae It was only 1½ years ago--in December 2007--that the Association of Koguryo Studies and the Association of Balhae History merged to form the Association of Koguryo Balhae. However, the actual history of the Association goes back 15 years to 1994. Upon realizing the severity of China's distortion of Goguryeo history and culture, Professor SEO Gil-su of Seokyeong University (first president of the Association of Koguryo Balhae) established the Koguryo Institute, the predecessor of the Association of Koguryo Studies. He researched Goguryeo culture by personally undertaking field work all over the vast expanse of Manchuria. At that time, most Koreans were only aware of the fact that Goguryeo history was a part of Korean history; we barely knew how many Goguryeo relics there were in China nor did we know much about their condition.

Exchange Program for History and Cultural Studies Teachers Swapping places: Way to Disentangle the knots of Historical Conflict The seeds of conflict are sown in the field of differing viewpoints. Differences in outlook play a major role in conflicts not only between individuals and groups but also within society and between nations. At the heart of historical conflicts in Northeast Asian--especially among Korea, China, and Japan--is deep-rooted, nation-centered historical perception and exclusivist nationalism.
Takeshima (Jukdo) or Matsushima (Songdo)? Question: Japan currently uses the name "Takeshima (Jukdo)" for Dokdo. However, it is said that Japan had been calling Dokdo "Matsushima (Songdo)" until the 19th century. Why has there been so much confusion concerning the naming of Dokdo in Japan? Answer: In the mid 19th century, Japan started calling Takeshima (竹島) "Matsushima (松島)" and gave Matushima (松島) a new name, "Liancourt Rocks (リヤンコ島)."
