The Way to 'Heukchiguk,' the home of Heukchisangji Is it possible for historians to completely shut themselves from the influence of the world they live in? For a starter, no matter how much they strive to maintain an objective viewpoint by keeping a certain distance from everyday lives, their private lives and cultural background somehow find their way into the research direction of historians. Besides, the current trend emerging in academia is leaving history researchers little room to maneuver. A growing number of scholars are resorting to research methodologies that pay attention to the real economy factors such as international trade when trying to identify a cause of tension between nations.

New perspective on the history of Balhae The history center of Balhae Dynasty, Korea's first-ever museum dedicated to the history and culture of Balhae, opened on July 10 in Sokcho-si, Kangwon-do, northeastern part of the country. Here, visitors are to learn about Balhae history research and findings. An academic conference was held on the day of opening, and among the attendees was Professor Zheng Yongzhen of Yanbian University, who is known for his excavation of the Mausoleum of Princess Jeonghyo, a major breakthrough in the study of Balhae history. We sat with the professor who is leading a range of excavation projects for historical remains of the Kingdom of Balhae as a director of the Balhae History Research Center at Yanbian University.

Saying thanks to advocates of Korea history and culture "Aloha," greeted Professor Richard D. McBride at Honolulu airport welcoming us. Our visit was to attend the workshop titled "State and Society in the Mature Silla Period" hosted by University of Hawaii at Manoa from June 22 to 26. One of the organizers was Professor McBride, a Silla Buddhism expert, at Brigham Young University, Hawaii.

Revisiting the forcible annexation from the perspective of "historical justice" The International conference on the centenary of Japan's forcible annexation of Korea in 1910 The year 2010 marks the centenary of Japan's forcible annexation of Korea. On the coercive annexation, Japan has made a far-fetched argument that the annexation has no problem in legal and moral terms or the treaty on annexation is legitimate even if some moral issues exist. In time for the centenary, therefore, it is a duty of our time to identify the root cause of Korea-Japan disputes over historical issues and seek solutions of the situation.

Objective and independent research on Japanese history The Korean Association for Japanese History Whether an academic discipline has established its own domain can be determined by the launch of its society and journal. For instance, the Asian history circles in Korea established the Society for Asian Historical Studies in November 1965 and launched the Journal of Asian Historical Studies in October 1966. In comparison, the Japanese history circles in Korea lagged far behind. They established the Korean Association for Japanese History in September 1994 and started to publish the Journal of Japanese History in March next year.

"To Establish the Foundation of Peace in Northeast Asia" Assistance to build foundation of Northeast Asian community To present mid- and long-term vision for Northeast Asia's reconciliation over historical issues, peace and prosperity, the Office of Policy Planning of the Northeast Asian History Foundation is pursuing three projects: First of all, the Office is supporting long-term, systematic research to establish a Northeast Asian community. The Office commissioned research projects to review and analyze debate points of Korea, China and Japan on a Northeast Asian community and its feasibility. Last year, the following three projects were selected and completed, whose results are expected to be published as the Foundation's book later this year.
