Setting the Stage for "Historical Reconciliation" I wish all those who care about and support the Northeast Asian History Foundation good health and good fortune in the Year of the Tiger.It has been three months since my inauguration, and I am pleased that the Northeast Asian History Foundation has been able to successfully wrap up 2009 to usher in the New Year.Three months is not a long time. However, we have been able to secure a budget befitting the status and role of the Foundation and have restructured our organization for further advancement and progress. Also, by enhancing the employee performance assessment system, we have established the basis for strengthening not only individual capabilities but also that of the Foundation at large.I would like to thank the Foundation’s managers, board, and staff for their hard work and cooperation.2010 is a meaningful year not only in Korean history but also in Northeast Asian history. It is the centennial of Japan’s forced annexation of Korea. It is also the 60th anniversary of the Korean

Trust Building through "Regional Cooperation" Must Come First Transnational economic and political communities are the trend these days. Northeast Asia, too, is in active pursuit of a "Northeast Asian community." However, it has a long way to go to catch up with the European Union (EU) or even the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). We ask Judge Yanai Shunji of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), who visited the Foundation to deliver a lecture on "The Implications and Tasks Concerning the Formation of a Northeast Asian Community," for his advice on the Northeast Asian Community.

Interesting Changes in Japanese Civil Society I was in Osaka and Tokyo from November 19 to 23 attending a conference for evaluating the activities of Korean and Japanese civil society groups concerning Japanese history textbooks as well as the 8th Forum on Historical Understanding and East Asian Peace. It was an important business trip. However, the trip was also personally meaningful because I got to experience the monumental changes sweeping Japanese civil society.

History/Culture Teacher Exchange Program Interesting Changes in Japanese Civil Society With Junichiro Koizumi paving the way, there appeared in Japan a string of extreme right-wing prime ministers?e.g. Shinzo Abe and Aso Taro, who brought with them a storm of historical conflicts to Northeast Asia. As there is sunshine after a storm, Northeast Asia is now seeing a new ray of hope. The inauguration of Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama of the Democratic Party put an end to the long-term rule of the Liberal Democratic Party and has heralded the beginning of the Northeast Asian era. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs, has even mentioned the creation and use of a "joint Korean-Chinese-Japanese textbook."

Invitational Seminar for Overseas Geography Teachers The Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan ("The Korean Council" hereafter) was founded on November 16, 1990. For the past 19 years, it has worked to restore the dignity and human rights of the victims through the proper resolution of the issue of Japanese military "comfort women." It has sought to build a united front for the women and the disadvantaged suffering from ongoing war and violence around the world. It has steadfastly carried out activities for the promotion of peace and the protection of human rights in order to prevent the recurrence of a tragedy such as that of Japan military "comfort women."

Invitational Seminar for Overseas Geography Teachers The Dokdo Research Institute held a two-day seminar on November 23-24, 2009. Overseas geography educators were invited to the event. There were 20 high school geography teachers from the United States and 16 geography teachers from Korea participating as presenters, discussants, and moderators of the seminar. The theme of the seminar was "Geography Education and the International Community." The Korean and American geography educators were at the center of the seminar, with around 70 geography experts, scholars, and other stakeholders in attendance. The seminar examined from an international perspective the issues concerning geographical naming with which educators encounter in the classroom setting.
