"And a path, at last, opened by a big river" With 2010, the year of history, coming to a close, I think about the most "historic" undertaking of 2010. I am talking about the Joint Declaration by Korean and Japanese Intellectuals Marking the Centennial of Japan's Forced Annexation of Korea (hereafter, "Joint Declaration"). With Korean and Japanese historians spearheading the effort, some 1,000 intellectuals of the two nations issued a joint declaration stating that the forced annexation in 1910 has been originally null and void. It was truly momentous.

Petroglyphs: Essence of Korean Prehistoric Art The 2010 International Conference on Petroglyphs Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Discovery of Korean Petroglyphs was held in October. Participating in the conference were 16 experts from 11 countries, including Professor Emeritus Moon Myung-dae, who was the first to discover petroglyphs in Korea. Their presentations and discussions served as an opportunity for an in-depth examination of the cultural and art-historical significance of Korean petroglyphs vis-à-vis Asian and global petroglyphs as well as the ancient history and cultural origins of the Korean people. We met with Professor Emeritus Moon Myung-dae to learn about Korean petroglyphs on the 40th anniversary of their discovery.

The Historiography and Peace of East Asia: Society, Nation, and the World In Search of the Link between the Historical Issues in East Asia and Peace An international conference on the theme "The Historiography and Peace of East Asia: Society, Nation, and the World" was held over two days—November 5-6—in Seoul. It was the third conference co-hosted by the Northeast Asian History Foundation and the Forum for the Study of East Asian History. There were a total of 40 participants from Korea, China, Japan, and Taiwan; 20 were foreign scholars. The conference was organized into 3 sessions and 6 panels. Including the keynote speech, the conference consisted of 21 presentations.

Origins and Exchanges among East Asian Civilizations New Path for Research on the History of East Asian Civilizations On the one hand, the active exchanges among East Asian nations are drawing the nations closer. On the other hand, we are also seeing the Northeast Asia Project and other exclusivist research trends geared toward centralizing the history of a given nation. To tackle this disturbing development, there is a need for frequent academic exchanges among East Asian scholars. On October 29, the Northeast Asian History Foundation and the Dankook University Institute of Oriental Studies co-hosted just such an event: an international conference on the theme "Origins and Exchanges among East Asian Civilizations". The conference paved a new path for research on the history of East Asian civilizations.

Lee Gyu-won, Inspector of Ulleungdo Paving the way for evidence supporting Korean sovereignty over Dokdo Lee Gyu-won was the only person to ever hold the title "Inspector of Ulleungdo" during the Joseon dynasty (during the reign of King Gojong). His work as the Inspector of Ulleungdo is one of the strongest evidence supporting Korea's claim over the sovereignty of Dokdo. The reason is that Dokdo is an affiliated island of Ulleungdo. Given that Ulleungdo is unequivocally Korean territory, it follows that Dokdo, which has always been grouped together with Ulleungdo, belongs to Korea as well.

The Scene in Japan on the Centennial of the Annexation Treaty The centennial of the forced annexation of Korea is drawing to a close. This essay recounts my thoughts as a Korean living in Japan, a country that had once colonized my homeland. It also contains my reflections on the issues that Japan must resolve at this point in time in regards to its relations with the two Koreas as well as Asia at large.
