Sino-Japanese War and the Yeonpyeong Island Incident The Yeonpyeong Island was shelled on November 23, 2010. The Northern Limit Line (NLL), the western maritime border between the two Koreas, has been respected over the past 50 years, and some questioned why North Korea disputed the NLL and attacked the Yeonpyeong Island at this point in time. Others pointed out that South Korea's inadequate counterattack was ridiculous. Throwing blows and returning them aggravates the situation, even leading to battles and wars. The sinking of the Cheonan, a South Korean naval ship, was a grave incident, and North Korea went on to attack South Korean territory.

2010 Performance and Key Projects for 2011 A Step Forward Toward a Peaceful Northeast Asia The year 2010 holds a significant meaning for the Northeast Asian History Foundation (hereafter "Foundation"). It was the centennial of Japan's forced annexation of Korea, and the Foundation looked back on the tragic events in modern Korean history and led the effort to lay the foundation for future-oriented Korea-Japan relations for the next century. As a result, the Foundation could solidify its standing as a key organization working to ease historical conflicts and promote peace and prosperity in Northeast Asia.

Learning modesty and embracing diversity from Istanbul In late November last year, I visited Turkey and had a chance to see some of the main attractions in Istanbul. It felt as if I walked into a world history book: before my eyes stood historical sites and buildings, including the Walls of Constantinople, Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Dolmabahçe Palace, Yerebatan Sarayı (or Basilica Cistern), Bosphorus Strait, and stone statues of Hittite and Mesopotamia. "Wow, this is what a truly global empire looks like," I thought.

History of Korea-China Partnership and the Academic Conference on the Korea-China Relations: Opinions on Collaboration and Resolution of Conflicts On December 7, 2010, the Korea-China Academic Conference was held in Seoul. The event, which was co-organized by the Northeast Asian History Foundation and Joongang Daily, was attended by 26 participants including China experts in Korea and Chinese scholars specializing in the Korean Peninsula issues from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Peking University, Fudan University, and other renowned universities and research institutes.

Working Together toward a Peaceful East Asia and the Possibility of Creating an 'Epistemic Community' A two-day symposium titled "Promoting Peace in East Asia and Transnational Cooperation" was hosted by the Foundation on December 17-18, 2010. The Foundation has held two conferences on a similar theme, in June and November 2009 respectively, and the symposium served as a platform for researchers and scholars to discuss a wide range of issues concerning cooperation in transnational areas such as the borderland between China and North Korea.

Myth of Archery in Northeast Asia and Criticism on the Sinocentric Interpretation of Myths This research was designed as part of the Northeast Asian History Foundation (hereafter "Foundation")'s 2009 project of Research on Ancient History of Northeast Asia. This study started by making an issue of China's sinocentric interpretation of myths, which tries to include all myths of the minority ethnic groups and even its neighboring nations in China's myths.

King Geunchogo – Leader of Integration King Geunchogo (近肖古王), the 13th king of Baekje, is the talk of the town because of a new TV historical drama, "King Geunchogo". In 50 episodes, the soap opera depicts how its main character, Buyeogu (扶餘句), overcame numerous obstacles before ascending the throne, and extended Baekje's reach southward and northward. More than half of the series have been aired so far.
