2012년 한일 관계를 전망하다
A Prospect of Korea-Japan Relations in 2012 On the surface, Korea and Japan seem to be in a very good relationship in the spring of 2012. The Korean waves of K-POP and drama are still strong, and the Japanese media express gratitude to the generous support extended by the Korean people since the 3/11 Great Earthquake last year. And Japan recently opened a trekking path near Fukuoka, similar to the Olle Path in Jeju Island of Korea, in an effort to restore the dramatically reduced number of Korean tourists visiting the country. In international politics, both countries are also building a consensus that they will jointly cope with any potential threat posed by the Kim Jung-eun administration of North Korea.

Important Steps for Promoting Goguryeo History to Western Academia "We hope to continue to forge working relations with Korean scholars so that their views and understandings of Korean history can be clearly presented to western readers." This year marks the 5th anniversary of the 'Early Korea Project' ('EKP') launched in 2007 by the NAHF with the mission of promoting Korean history (Goguryeo history) to western academia. Dr. Mark Byington at Harvard is deeply involved in EKP programs which have produced many results since the beginning in 2007. In the following interview, he discussed in detail the motivation for the creation of the EKP and its results so far. The interview was conducted via email and it is presented in a Q&A format for the convenience of the readers.

Expert Forum on the Victims of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan Speaking of Hope for the Victims of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan An expert forum titled "Speaking of Hope for the Victims of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan" was held in the NAHF Conference Room from 11:50 am to 1:50 pm on March 8, 2012. The panel consisted of Yoon Mi-hyang (Head of the Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan (the "Korean Council") and also a guest speaker for the History Concert ("Speaking of Hope! - For the Victims of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan!") celebrating the March 1st Movement held two days later in the Centennial Hall of Ewha Girls High School), Wada Yoshihiro (representing the Japanese Committee for the Establishment of the War & Women's Rights Museum), and myself. We spoke on the follow-ups of Korea and Japan to the decision of the Consitutional Court of Korea, including the movements and the positions of the civil societies and the reactions of the governments of both countries.

March 1st Movement Commemorative History Concert Not to Repeat the Wednesdays of the Past Two Decades We 'Haetdam' members were all excited with the news that the Northeast Asian History Foundation was going to host the March 1st Movement Commemorative History Concert for the victims of military sexual slavery by Japan, an event that would raise awareness and understanding of the 'comfort women' issue. It was also fortunate for our new Haetdam members to have a valuable opportunity to attend this event as their first activity.

Russia Confirms That Dokdo Is a Korean Territory In modern times, Russia accumulated factual resources on Korea that would give an overview of the situations of Korea as a whole. Based on these resources, a number of books were published, notably 『An Overview of Korea』 by diplomat Porgio, 『A Chronicle of Korea』 by the Ministry of Finance of Russia, and 『An Overview of Korea』 by Orientalist N.V.Kyuner.

윤봉길의 홍구공원 의거와 동양 평화
Yoon Bong-gil's Bombing Attack in Honggu Park and Peace of the East There is Yushukan (遊就館) next to Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, Japan. It is a kind of a war memorial hall that exhibits the history of Japan's invasion wars up to the Pacific War. Apparently Japan is remembering it as 'a history of proud glory,' although it is 'a history of invasion' from the viewpoint of Asians as victims. During my stay in Japan in 2000, I visited Yushukan and saw a blood-stained military uniform on display in the glass box. It belonged to General Yoshinori Shirakawa (白川義則), the commander in chief of the Shanghai Expeditionary Army who would die from the injury suffered in Yoon Bong-gil's bombing attack.

상해, 남경 답사와 동아시아사 수업
Field Trips to Shanghai and Nanjing, and the East Asian History Class I have been assigned to teach 'East Asian History' starting from March 2012. It is a new course that feels very unfamiliar to me for I am used to teaching the traditional Korean History-World History curriculum. I was worried at the prospect of teaching this new course, until the Northeast Asian History Foundation offered the 'training program for teachers of East Asian history' during the breaks. I was lucky to be chosen for the program that included a good lecture and field trips to Shanghai and Nanjing in China.
