Implications of the Sino-Japanese Territorial Dispute: Territorial Disputes and the Use of Armed Force "China, which said it would keep a low profile without revealing what it could do (韜光養晦), has risen to be a big country to be reckoned with." This is my impression of the recent row over the Shenkaku (尖閣: a.k.a. Diaoyu in Chinese) Islands. When a horde of Chinese fishing vessels entered the Shenkaku waters that Japan had claimed to be their territory, and the marine surveillance ships of the CMS (China Marine Surveillance: Korea's equivalent of Coast Guard) stayed there for as many as seven hours under the pretense of 'sovereignty protection,' all Japan managed to do in response was to send in Japan Coast Guard patrol boats to remind the Chinese through the microphones, "You are in the territorial waters of Japan." And China went on to proclaim a territorial sea baseline there on September 10, 2012.

History Concert for Adolescents and Young Adults in JapanThinking of Korea-Japan Relations in the light of Dokdo and History Issues The 6th History Concert for adolescents and young adults in Japan was held for two days starting from November 21, 2012. This was the NAHF's first History Concert held in Japan, the previous ones having been held in Korea starting from last year as education and discussion channels through which to communicate on history with younger generations. We as organizers were worried and concerned about this event during preparation, what with the tension intensifying between Korea and Japan over Japan's inappropriate comments on 'comfort women' and particularly Abe Shinzo's winning of the LDP presidential election that would add to the increasingly rightward shift in Japanese society. However, as our concerns were outweighed by the voice of Japanese society that it was a good time to provide adolescents and young adults in Japan with an opportunity to better understand and consider historical issues between Korea and Japan, we proceeded with the event.

한중수교 20주년 기념 국제학술회의《연행록》을 통해 살펴본 한중관계
International Conference Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Korea and China Sino-Korean Relations in View of Yeonhaengrok Over the course of 2012, the year that marked the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the ROK and China, the NAHF has conducted a lot of events, including various conferences, collecting opinions on the historical significance of the ROK-China diplomatic ties, the direction and the historical and contemporary significance of Northeast Asian relations to come. The event held on November 24, 2012 was one of them; it looked back on the twenty years of the ROK-China diplomatic ties, and, in particular, explored the past and future of Sino-Korean relations through Yeonhaengrok, an important historical document between Korea and China.

NAHF-East Asian History Research Forum Co-host Conference Reviewing China within the East Asian Culture An international conference, co-hosted by the Northeast Asian History Foundation and East Asian History Research Forum, was held with resounding success at Yonsei University for two days, from November 2, Friday, to November 3, Saturday, 2012, on the theme 'China within East Asian Culture.' East Asian History Research Forum, initiated from an international conference conducted by the NAHF in 2008. has co-hosted conferences with the NAHF on global scales every year with the objective of "providing scholars of East Asian history with an opportunity to communicate and exchange views with one another, in order to resolve the issue of conflicts arising from differing perceptions of East Asian history." This conference was the fifth of its kind, where a total of 40 scholars and experts at home and abroad participated in presentation and discussion.

Report on History Concert for Youths My Experience in 'A Country Envisioned by King Gwanggaeto the Great' Once upon a time, Alexander the Great was envisioning a country. Was it present-day Macedonia? And, is the ideal country envisioned by Genghis Khan present-day Mongolia? Couldn't it be, perhaps, that our proud King Gwanggaeto the Great envisioned a country much greater and more wonderful than the one envisioned by Alexander the Great or Genghis Khan? And will the Republic of Korea qualify as such a country?

Pre-Modern Japan's Perception of Territory Japan's Perception of Territorial Boundaries as Reflected in Historical Records and Old Maps Pre-Modern Japan's Perception of Territory, the 63th publication of the Northeast Asian History Foundation's research series, was designed to offer a historical explanation of the 'change of Japan's perception of territory' with focus on pre-modern (ancient, medieval, recent) times.Today, Japan finds itself in territorial disputes with its East Asian neighbors like Korea and China. This book explores pre-modern Japan's perception of territory to track back the origin of Japan's territorial conflicts. After all, throughout the history of mankind, peoples have established the concepts of territory and border to define their place of living, and pre-modern Japan was no exception in taking interest in territory and border.

Qing Emperor Qianlong (乾隆帝) and His Campaigns of Conquest One of the interesting topics that draw attention from the community studying the history of Qing at home and abroad is the controversy surrounding the two opposing viewpoints of understanding Qing's history. The one argues that the Manchu had successfully ruled China through Sinicization. And the other takes the position that in ruling China the Qing Dynasty had held fast to Machurian traditions, including Manchurian language, Manchurian letters, and Manchurian customs, since it took possession of Shanhaiguan.

Report on the 11th History Academy of the Northeast Asian History Foundation What I Thought While Listening to the Lecture on the Gwanggaeto Stele Why We Really Learn History Would it be nice if the past were beautiful? Of course. The more beautiful, the better. But if we tried to make the past beautiful to compensate for what we think is lacking in the present, what we get wouldn't be true beauty. I feel that one of the Korean people's collective wishes is for our nation to have larger land. And that may explain why we Koreans feel very much drawn to the king who, as history tells us, had vast territory under his rule. Koreans aren't the only people, of course, fantasizing and being nostalgic about their past glories. China or Japan is also trapped in similar historical perception. They say history should be a source of inspiration and lesson.
