An Outlook on Historical Disputes in Northeast Asia and What We Should Do About Them Recently reported by the foreign press was the death of Japanese film director Oshima Nagisa (大島渚). Rising to worldwide fame for his movie In the Realm of the Senses (1976), he was the pioneer of the unique film genre where sex was portrayed as a means of challenging power (Japan's imperialism). In Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), he expressed sympathies for Koreans in a scene where the Koreans drafted to fight in the Pacific War were forced to commit hara-kiri. However, enlightened intellectuals like Oshima are little known to the Korean society under nationalistic influence where people are taught to perceive the Japanese and the Chinese as a single category.

Interview with Professor Yu In-sun, author of Vietnam and its Neighbor China Lessons Should Be Learned from Vietnam’s History of Equal Diplomacy with China Editor's Notes: The ongoing Northeast Asian conflicts over territorial disputes and historical issues are at a new juncture this year when a new administration is formed. For this month's NAHF News, Professor Yu In-sun was invited for an interview. He is the one who, at the International Conference Celebrating the 300th Anniversary of the Erection of the Mt. Baekdu Border Monument hosted by the NAFH in June last year, suggested that "more attention should be paid to the art of diplomacy adopted by the Le Dynasty of Vietnam in their relations with the Qing Dynasty of China if were to find a solution to territorial conflicts among the three Northeast Asian countries." The interview conducted by NAHF Research Fellow Kim Jung-hyun is presented below.

The Ji'an Koguryo Stele(集安高句麗碑) : Its Discovery and Contents Editor's Notes: The Chinese government announced recently that the 'Ji'an Koguryo Stele (集安高句麗碑)' had been discovered in 2012 and was now under study. The new Koguryo stele that came onto the scene is considered a subject of keen interest and important significance by historians at home and abroad. '지안고구려비(集安高句麗碑)'의 내용과 그 역사적 의미
The Ji'an Koguryo Stele: Its Contents and Their HistoricalSignificance In January 2013, it came to the attention of the Korean press that a Koguryo stele had been discovered in Ji'an City in Jilin Province of China, the city that used to be the second capital of Koguryo. It was said that since the actual date of its discovery, July 29 of 2012, this stele had been examined by local experts to decipher its inscriptions. This news was made public when it appeared in an article by the China Cultural Relics News, the official gazette of the State Bureau of Cultural Relics of China, dated January 4, 2013. Considering that the discovery of a stele related to Koguryo is a rare event, it was extremely exciting news. When the insufficiency of materials is a scourge to those studying ancient history, especially the history of Koguryo, the value of an epigraph, a direct product by people of the times, cannot be overemphasized.

『한중역사현안 바로알기』를 펴내며
On Publishing Correct Understanding of the Controversies over the Histories of Korea and China While the Northeast Project is often cited as an example of historical controversies between Korea and China, few people know as much that the Northeast Project is short for '東北邊疆歷史與現狀系列硏究工程' and this research project was completed in 2007. Furthermore, the term Northeast Project is being used widely beyond its original meaning, as can be seen in China's recent announcement of the 'total length of the All-Time Great Wall of China' being thought to be a follow-up project of the Northeast Project. This naturally leads us to these questions: "What is the Northeast Project? If it is completed, what are the ongoing historical controversies between Korea and China?"

리훙장(李鴻章) -조약체제에 맞서 조공체제를 끝까지 고수하려 하다
Li Hongzhang (李鴻章) -the Defender of the Tributary System Against the Treaty System Li Hongzhang (李鴻章, 1823-1901) was a Chinese statesman during the Qing Dynasty. Commonly known as Northern Ocean Minister (北洋大臣), his official title was '太子太傳文華殿大學士商務大臣北洋大臣直隸總督部堂一等肅毅伯,' according to the Boxer Protocol (辛丑和約 or 北京議定書) signed in 1901 with the nations involved in quelling the Boxer Rebellion. Much like Kim Ok-gyun (1851-1894), a Korean politician in his time, Li Hongzhang has polarized people judging his merits and faults in history.
