Dreaming of a Future of Korea, China, and Japan of Good Neighborliness In recent years, the Northeast Asian situation surrounding the three countries of Korea, China, and Japan has been serious. While there has been communication and improvement in the relationship between Korea and China (e.g. mutual state visits), the rifts between Korea and China and between China and Japan have deepened because of historical issues, such as the 'comfort women' issue, and territorial disputes over Dokdo and Diaoyudao (also known in Japan as the Senkaku Islands), and the national sentiment toward the other country has been getting worse as a result.In history, particularly from the modern period onward, the three countries of Korea, China, and Japan experienced unfortunate events, such as colonial rule and struggle for independence, war of aggression and resistance against aggression, wars and ideological confrontations during the Cold War period. Korea-Kazakhstan Policy Cooperation ForumIn Search of New Cooperation with Central Asian/Eurasian Studies Communities The NAHF hosted the 2014 Korea-Kazakhstan Policy Cooperation Forum over a two-day period from the 11th to the 12th of September. This forum is the third joint academic event that has been held since the conclusion of an MOU for academic cooperation with the Turkic Academy in Kazakhstan in 2011.The grand theme of this year's forum was “Historical and Cultural Link Between Kazakhstan and Korea.” The theme for the 11th day was 'Historical and Spiritual Values and Integration: Korea and Kazakhstan' focusing on pre-modern periods. When I Become Close and Familiar with Another Country I had a wonderful experience when I visited Kyoto again during my one-year stay in Japan a few years ago. I had already visited Kyoto about four times over the course of ten years or so. During my first visit as a child, I had found every temple or building amazing and interesting. But in the subsequent visits, my attitude had been invariably like, "They're just temples and towers." The fifth visit, however, turned out to be different. It was perhaps because of the knowledge accumulated in my head over the years. I began to understand the streets and structure of the city. Then I felt like visiting the city on my own. Yu Gwansun, a Flower of the Nation Patriotic martyr Yu Gwan-soon (December 16, 1902 - September 28, 1920) was born as the second daughter among three sons and two daughters in an ordinary family in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province. She was transferred and admitted to the second year of ordinary-level class at Ewha Academy in around 1914, and then proceeded to the first year of high-level class at Ewha Girls School in 1918. What is the Balhae Stele? As reported by the Chinese press this summer, the Chinese academia and NGOs began to demand the return of the 'Honglu Well Stele' that had been taken away by Japan during the Russo-Japanese War. First of all, it is necessary to sort out the misunderstanding arising from the stele's name. Although known as the 'Balhae Stele,' this stele was not erected by Balhae, as it is mistakenly believed. The stele was left by Cui Xin, an envoy of the Tang Dynasty who had nothing to do with Balhae, in Lushun at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula during his visit to the Balhae region. It had been called the 'Honglu Well Stele' or 'Tang Stele' when the stele and the pavilion around it were moved into the imperial palace of Japan. It became known as the Balhae Stele because of the twenty-nine Chinese characters inscribed on it, which are translated as follows:

한·중·일 협력 국제학술회의 협력과 공생! 한·중·일이 나아갈 길
International Conference on Trilateral Cooperation Korea, China, and Japan Should Work Together Toward Cooperation and Coexistence! The NAHF and Kookmin University co-hosted an international conference on 'Beyond conflict and toward cooperation among the three countries of Korea, China, and Japan' in Seoul on September 12, 2014. This conference was an occasion to invite the Chinese and Japanese scholars who participated in the NAHF's joint research project to Seoul for the discussion of the topic together with Korean experts. The conference was highlighted for its significance, all the more because it coincided with the high-level talks among the governments of Korea, China, and Japan held in Seoul.
