Let's Build a Framework for Dialogue and Solidarity Beyond the Borders and Division Lines The end of World War II seventy years ago was an event of great significance that brought a new hope to mankind by defeating the forces of evil and closing a chapter in world history dominated by the irrationality of the strong preying on the weak. With the fall of Nazi Germany at the hands of the Allies, Europe was liberated from the grip of totalitarian and fascist dictatorship and the threat of ethnic persecution. The 15th day of August in 1945, when the Japanese Emperor surrendered after the atomic bombings, became the day of liberation that set Asia free from imperialist colonial rule and ruthless exploitation. But in the next seventy years of postwar history, Europe and East Asia walked on paths that turned out to be vastly different from each other. "The Importance of Establishing Northeast Asian History and Conducting Joint Research between Neighboring Countries with a Shared History and Culture" Editor's Note: This year marks exactly a quarter of a century since Korea and Mongolia established diplomatic relations. The two countries share common elements of history and culture on various levels. For example, our ancestors from ancient Korean states (e.g. Koguryo and Buyeo) established early settlements in the eastern Mongol region. Therefore, academic exchange between the two countries is essential to studying the roots of our ancestors. There has been continued academic exchange between Korea and Mongolia in the areas of history and culture since the establishment of the Korea-Mongolia Council of Historians in 2011 under the MOU between the NAHF and the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (MAS). For this month's issue of the NAHF newsletter, S. International Conference on the 70th Anniversary of Korea's Liberation from Japanese Colonial Rule (the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Korea and Japan) "Recognize the Big Picture Shaped by a Power Shift in Northeast Asia" On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule (and also the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan), an international conference was hosted by the NAHF, held under the auspices of The Dong-A Ilbo. The purpose of this conference was to allow experts from Korea, China, and Japan to share their thoughts about recent political changes in East Asia, 'historical revisionism' of the Abe administration of Japan, the 'comfort women' issue, and so on, and seek new solutions to those issues.This conference was held under the theme "East Asia in Turbulence: Beyond History and Toward a New Order" from the 2nd to the 4th of July 2015, during which about twenty participants, experts on international affairs in Northeast Asia and college professors from Korea, and China, and Japan, were engaged in active discussion. Gojoseon's Cultural Heritage Sites Found in China From July 13 to 18, 2015, a joint group of the NAHF and the National Institute of Korean History (NIKH) was on a field trip to explore historic sites in China related to ancient Korean history, including Shanhai Pass, Jieshi Mountain, and a number of Neolithic and Bronze Age sites in Liaoning Province and Inner Mongolia. Specifically, Qinhuangdo (秦皇島) in Hebei Province (遼寧省), Lingyuan (凌源) and Chaoyang (朝陽) in Liaoning Province (遼寧省), and Chifeng (赤峰) in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (內蒙古自治區) were explored. The First Emperor of Qin Lays Down the Foundation of 'China' The First Emperor (259 - 210 B.C.), or King Zheng of Qin as he was known before uniting the whole China, built a solid government by appointing talented men to office, regardless of their nationality. At the same time, he used sophisticated diplomatic skills and a strong military power built around the calvary in destroying the Han Dynasty in 230 B.C. He went on to conquer five more states (Zhao, Wei, Chu, Yan, and Qi), thereby achieving the unification of China in a span of only ten years. Having unified China, King Zheng of Qin dropped the title 'king' and replaced it with the title 'emperor,' which would remain in use for about 2,100 years by the subsequent dynasties of China as the official title for their ruler, until the fall of the Qing Dynasty. The First Emperor divided the entire country into 36 commanderies, each being administered by a civil governor (shou 守), a military commander (wei 尉) and an imperial inspector (監), and divided these commanderies into counties. The Site of Patriot Kang Woo-kyu's Attempted Assassination of the Japanese Governor-General of Korea The Old Korean Man Whose Valor Frightens Imperial Japan It was 5 p.m. on September 2, 1919. The square in front of the Namdaemun Station, the present-day Seoul Station square, was crowded with people who had been brought in to welcome Saito Makoto, the third Governor-General coming to Japan's colony of Korea. The mission of this new Governor-General, appointed after the March 1st Movement was suppressed, was to tighten the grip of colonial rule over Korea in the name of so-called 'cultural rule.'When Saito and his company, having arrived at the Namdaemun Station, were about to get on a carriage after the welcoming ceremony, there was an instant mayhem as a man in the crowd suddenly produced a grenade from his jacket and threw it at Saito, only to miss him. This incident made the daily headlines, and an extensive search to find the man was launched.
