Joint Interdisciplinary Research between History and Political Science Politics in East Asia seem to be growing ever more unpredictable with new administrations already in power in the United States or about to come into power in South Korea. At times like these, Chairman Ha Young-sun of the East Asia Institute, based on his extensive experience in studying international politics and diplomacy, shares his ideas on how Korea can resolve diplomatic issues with China and Japan and offers advice on the direction South Korean diplomacy as well as the Northeast Asian History Foundation should head toward. _ Editor’s note

A Reporter's Account of the Twelfth Takeshima Day In 1995 when the late Kim Young-sam was serving as president, the South Korean government announced its plan to build a pier on the island of Dokdo. Once construction began in February 1996, the relations between South Korea and Japan grew tense as the Japanese foreign minister Ikeda Yukihiko (池田行彦) argued that “Takeshima (竹島, Japanese name for Dokdo) is Japanese territory.” South Koreans at the time denounced the high-ranking Japanese official’s words as a “preposterous remark” and staged a boycott against Japanese goods. Civic groups and college student councils in Korea launched campaigns over the matter and distributed badges with the phrase “Dokdo is our [Korean] territory.”

Latest Sources and Research on Koguryo Mural Tombs On February 23, 2017, the Northeast Asian History Foundation's Research Institute of Korea-China Relations jointly held an academic conference with Seoul Baekje Museum under the theme "Latest Results of Research on Koguryo Mural Tombs." The purpose of the conference was to celebrate the "Special Exhibition on Koguryo Tomb Murals" held at the Seoul Baekje Museum from December 29, 2016 to March 5, 2017. The special exhibition was organized based on replicas, restorations, and digital material provided by the Northeast Asian History Foundation (NAHF) and Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation (KCRC).

French Recognition and Education of its Colonial Past Although more than half a century has gone by since Korea became liberated from the rule of Imperial Japan, the two countries' relations are still suffering from unresolved issues involving the past. Where, then, did such issues of the past stem from? Despite having been oppressed for thirty-five years and suffered from indescribable pain because of Imperial Japan, the relations between Korea and Japan would not have been as entangled as it is now if Japan had properly acknowledged its past mistakes and showed respect for Korea's history, culture, and identity. Japan has instead chosen to distort history by glorifying its past acts of aggression. This contribution therefore aims to indirectly point out what is problematic about Japan's approach by reviewing the way France recognizes and provides education about its colonial past that shares similarities with Japanese imperialism.
