The Issue of Japanese Military “Comfort Women” and Colonialism In August, NAHF, co-hosted with the National Institute of Korean History, held an international academic conference to commemorate the 2024 National Memorial Day for the Japanese Military “Comfort Women” Victims. The conference theme focused on “Perceptions of War and Colonialism in East Asia and the Politics of Memory: Knowledge and Understanding of the History of Japanese Military ‘Comfort Women.” It was organized in two parts: Part 1 focused on overcoming historical conflicts and addressing post-colonial challenges, while Part 2 explored the understanding of colonial history without colonies and the issue of Japanese military “comfort women.” You can find further details about this conference in the September issue of the Northeast Asian History Foundation News.
1920~1930년대 국제사회의 인신매매 억제규범과 식민주의 문제
The International Norms on Anti-Trafficking in Persons in the 1920s–1930s and the Issue of Colonialism Attempts to compare the Japanese military “comfort women” system with regulated prostitution stem from anti-intellectualism, rooted in ignorance of history. The way to overcome this is to return to history and understand the establishment of the Japanese military “comfort women” system during the Asia-Pacific War. This article examines the international agreements on suppressing the trafficking in women and children by the League of Nations during the interwar period, the Japanese government's response to them, and the perceptual invisibility of the colonial issues among the imperialist nations.

Meeting with the Author Basic Sourcebook for the Study of Modern Korea-Japan Relations: Diplomatic Documents of the Korean Empire “Il-An”(日案) Diplomatic Documents of the Korean Empire “Il-An”(日案) (1) is a comprehensive collection of historical materials, created through the collaboration of experts from various fields over three years. This is the first time it has been translated and published in Korea. Notably, Il- An (1) covers the period from February 1876 to August 1889, which is expected materials to fill in the chronological gaps in the existing history of Korea-Japan relations. This article introduces Diplomatic Documents of the Korean Empire “Il-An”(日案), while the translation of Il-An (2) is currently in progress.

A Comparative Study of Lunar August 15th Festivals : Korea's Chuseok and Japan's Tsukimi On the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, various East Asian countries have celebrated this period meaningfully. In Korea, it is known as Chuseok (秋夕), in China as Zhongqiu (中 秋), and in Japan as Tsukimi (月見). The Chinese term highlights the autumn season, the Japanese term focuses on the act of moon-viewing, and the Korean term encompasses both aspects. This article compares Korea's Chuseok and Japan's Tsukimi.
