Koguryo, Fallen but Alive

Koguryo, Fallen but Alive The year 2018 marks the 1,350th year since the ancient Korean kingdom Koguryo fell in 668. Sasindo refers to a painting of four deities representing north, south, east, and west that can mainly be found on murals inside ancient Koguryo tombs. The tomb Gangseo daemyo is particularly known for perfectly depicting the principle of the five elements with a yellow dragon drawn at the center of the ceiling in addition to the walls that feature the blue dragon guarding the east, the white tiger guarding the west, the red phoenix guarding the south, and the black tortoise and serpent guarding the north. The graceful lines and vivid colors that bring the four deities to life transcends time and space to convey to those in the present the stately vigor and artistic spirit of the Koguryo people.
