March 1st Movement and Memorial of 3‧1 Independence Declaration

On March 1, 1919, national leaders held a declaration of independence in Taehwagwan, which became the fire that sparked the March 1st Independence Movement. The Memorial of 3‧1 Independence Declaration was built in Tapgol Park, the site of the independence movement, in order to honor the noble spirit of independence that characterizes this day. The monument honors the nation and its leaders, as 33 of the national leaders’ names are carved into the monument. The March 1st Movement was a national independence movement aimed at the modern sovereign state, spurred by the desires and demands of our own people. As this year marks the centennial of the March 1st Movement, it is worthwhile to recall and meditate on the democratic, peaceful and nonviolent spirit of the independence movement, and to revisit it from a modern perspective.
