A Photograph and Courage Another wave of historical distortions is sweeping Japan. On April 9, the Japanese government approved the history textbook published by Jiyusha. The government even added that the evaluation was conducted in an objective manner. But the contents of the textbook tell a very different story. Japan's historical consciousness, mired in distortion after distortion, has not taken a single step toward rectification. As a Korean citizen and educator, I am beyond anger and overcome with a sense of bitterness.

Familiarizing the International Community with the "East Sea" For Koreans, the mention of the Dokdo issue and the naming of the "East Sea" can be frustrating. Through seminars and other such activities, Korea is engaged in public- and private-sector efforts to inform the world of the name "East Sea." Nevertheless, there is still much work that needs to be done. Professor Rainer DORMELS, a visiting scholar to the Foundation, is studying the issue of the naming of the East Sea. We asked him for his advice and insight.

Differences in Viewpoints and a Multiple-Point Perspective One summer, over a decade ago, some Korean scholars, including myself, had a chance to have dinner at a home of a nomad in the Mongolian steppes. The lady of the house quickly lit the stove, kneaded dough, and prepared noodle soup for the unexpected visitors. Mongolian nomads use dried cow dung to light a fire. When the fire weakened, the lady fed the fire with more cow dung and resumed the meal preparation. One of the scholars who had been watching this refused to eat the noodle soup. The reason: the food was made by the same "dirty hands that had touched excrement."

One Step Toward a History of Truth and Reconciliation International symposium commemorating the founding of the International NGO History Forum for Peace in East Asia First, I would like to welcome the establishment of the International NGO History Forum for Peace in East Asia, whose founding ceremony was held on April 1. Its founding vision is set forth as follows: to develop agendas to promote peace and historical reconciliation in Northeast Asia and serve as a communication channel between NGOs. The Forum seeks a shared historical awareness by working not only with Korean NGOs but also with history-related NGOs around the world and strives to contribute to the building of a peaceful society founded on cooperation and mutual growth.

Developing an Accurate History of Korea-Japan Relations Historical Society of Korea-Japan Relations< Korea-Japan relations has long been ignored despite its intimate ties to the realities of Korean history. Most of the research on the history of Korea-Japan relations has been initiated by Japanese scholars in order to justify Japanese colonial historiography. Given that the field developed from intentions to distort history, it is riddled with many problems. Korea also faces the challenge of reorganizing its history within the context of East Asian history, and furthermore, within the context of world history. Against such a backdrop, research on the history of Korea's external relations--the foundation for the study of Korean history--has certainly been inadequate. The field has been considered a "special" historical field and neglected; therefore, the corpus of Korean history is not yet whole. Foreign affairs are an extension and international expression of domestic affairs.

Survey of the Number of Days Dokdo is Visible from Ulleugndo Dokdo is visible! "Dokdo has long been Korean territory." The veracity of this statement is something I first grasped with my heart than with my mind. One spring day in May 1985, I stood atop Manghyang Peak overlooking downtown Dodong of Ulleungdo. My vision is not that great, but afar, in the middle of the ocean, I clearly saw Dokdo, which resembled the humped back of a camel. I got to see Dokdo before I had set foot in it. Back then, I did not know about Mangi Yoram [Book of Ten Thousand Techniques of Governance], the "Dajokan Directive," or any other textual record that proved Korea's historical sovereignty over Dokdo. And yet, my heart knew that Dokdo had always been a part of Korea.

What is AN Jung-geun's "Vision for East Asian Peace"? Question: Q: This year marks the 99th anniversary of the death of AN Jung-geun and the centennial of his assassination of ITO Hirobumi in Harbin. The activities he had carried out to defend and liberate Korea are already well known, but there seems to be a growing interest in his thoughts and ideas.
