Historical Understanding and a Changing Northeast Asia This year is going to see many changes in the leadership of Northeast Asia. With the death of Kim Jong-il late last year, the future of North Korea is becoming uncertain. It is hard to predict how much longer North Korea could go on in the state of isolation, lagging behind the times and being disapproved of by the international community. South Korea is already busy preparing for the general and the presidential elections. The United States is also proceeding with a presidential election and Japan is expecting general elections. China is scheduled to replace its leadership. Russia is also going to have a presidential election. In other words, the political situation in Northeast Asia is becoming increasingly volatile.

"East Asian History Education for Fresh Perspectives of East Asian History and for Forward-looking Historical Dialogue" Starting from March this year, Korea will offer its first East Asian history class in high school classrooms across the country. They will use one the two authorized textbooks, one by Kyohak Publishing and the other by Chunjae Publishing. This month's issue features the interview that Researcher Kim Jung-Hyun of NAHF had with Sohn Seung-Cheol, the primary author of the East Asian history textbook by Kyohak and history professor of Kangwon National University, over the background of offering the East Asian history class and the motivation for compiling and writing the textbook, and the significance of East Asian history education.

Joint Conference on 'Changing Northeast Asia and Historical Understanding' On February 7, NAHF held a conference on 'Changing Northeast Asia and Historical Understanding' in the Vista Hall on the 3rd floor of the Future Hall at Pukyong National University, jointly with the 21st Century Political Science Association, the Jeju Peace Institute, and the International Regional Institute of the Pukyong National University. This conference is significant in that it brought social scientists and historians together to explore changes in Northeast Asia and the patterns of those changes. Even in the rapidly changing international order, changes will follow certain patterns. And identifying those patters might help the state establish consistent diplomatic and cultural policies.

동아시아사 교원현장연수 "역사를 기억하고, 평화를 실현하자"
"Remember History and Achieve Peace" I visited China for 4 nights and 5 days from February 13 to 17 this year for the 'field training for teachers of East Asian history.' It was participated by 25 teachers chosen from those who had completed the group training sessions (winter/summer) for teachers of East Asian history in 2011. The purpose of this field training was to help prepare the teachers for the use of the East Asian history textbooks in Korean high school classrooms in 2012, enhancing their specialty in the subject by allowing them to gain field experience and knowledge in East Asian regions and a balanced view through exchange with the teachers of the visiting country. Marking the third time this year, the field training took place in locations across Shanghai and Nanjing in China under the theme 'Meet East Asia in China - in Search of the Chinese Culture and the Sites of Anti-Japanese Movements.'

Petroglyphs in Central and Eastern Kyrgyzstan For the past 5 years, the Northeast Asian History Foundation has researched prehistoric and ancient rock carvings distributed across Central Asia, jointly with the local academic institution and scholars. The geographic area of research extended northward to include the Hakasco-Minusinsk basin and the Republic of Tuva in Southern Siberia, the Govi-Altai and the Uvs aimags in Mongolia, and westward to include southeastern Kazakhstan and central and eastern Kyrgyzstan. The Foundation has continued to publish rock art research papers based on the research results.

One Year after the Great Earthquake : Where Is Japan Headed Now? 1. I have never experienced such a ghastly, unholy, and dark night before. The sidewalks of the road in front of the University of Tokyo in Hongo (本鄕) which had turned into a parking lot with bumper-to-bumper cars were packed with office workers wearing white helmets and white masks that mismatched their suits. What kept my hair standing on end was the shell-shocked, lifeless look on their face. That not even a single whisper was heard from such a large crowd was enough to leave me more terrified. Walking in tandem toward the same direction on both sides of the road, they looked straight out of a horror movie where they were being endlessly sucked into a huge tomb. (March 11, 2011)

One Year after the Great Earthquake : Where Is Japan Headed Now? We celebrated the 93rd anniversary of the March 1st Movement. When we say the 'March 1st Movement,' we are often reminded of independence activist Yu Gwan-sun, the '33 national representatives,' or the Declaration of Independence. And when we say the '33 national representatives, we might have to think hard before we could remember Sohn Byung-hee or Han Yong-woon. Among the 33 national representatives, Mr. Oh Se-chang is a relatively unknown member. And let me take this opportunity to introduce him to the readers.

How is Dokdo described in the Japanese high school textbooks? Question How is Dokdo described in the Japanese high school textbooks? How will it be described in the textbooks to be authorized this year? Answer The Japanese high school textbooks authorization results are scheduled to be announced late March or early April. Japan's unreasonable claims over Dokdo are likely to be found again in the textbooks as they were in 2007 and 2008. Let us first examine how the current Japanese high school textbooks describe Dokdo.
