한중수교 20년에 중국을 생각하며
Thinking of China in the 20th Year of Diplomatic Ties between Korea and China This year (2012) is the monumental year marking the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Korea and China. As the Korean saying goes, a decade is a time long enough to see changes even in the rivers and the mountains. To be sure, the last two decades have seen prodigious changes in Korea-China relations. Twenty years ago, while Korea was hurrying to establish diplomatic ties with China, China was relaxed, saying that once the water starts to flow, it will form a brook. What we see twenty years later is not a brook but vast routes open in the air and the sea. Last year, there was a traffic of about 6.68 million people crossing the air and sea routes between Korea and China to visit the other country, and of goods worth 245.6 billion dollars (statistics by China) across the Yellow Sea.

Dokdo Event Data, the Empirical and Systematic Data that Prove Korea's Territorial Sovereignty While the tension between Korea and Japan over the Dokdo issue is growing as Japan repeats its claim that 'Dokdo is a Japanese territory' through its blue book of foreign affairs among other sources, the Northeast Asian History Foundation has published the book titled Sixty Years of the Dokdo Issue and Korea's Territorial Sovereignty: Dokdo Event Data (1952 to 2010) in which a sample of 538 'Dokdo events' that occurred between the two countries from 1952 to 2010 was used to analyze the pattern of Japan's provocative sovereignty claims over Dokdo and lay an academic foundation for reinforcing the new logic that supports Korea's sovereignty over Dokdo. The interview of this issue is with Bae Jin-soo, the senior researcher at NAHF and author of this book.

The 18th International Seminar on Sea Names A Venue for International Cooperation for Making the Name 'East Sea' the International Standard From March 7 to 8, 2012, "the 18th International Seminar on Sea Names: Asian and European Viewpoints" was held in Brussels, the capital of the Kingdom of Belgium. This event was hosted by the Northeast Asian History Foundation jointly with the Society for East Sea, the EU-Korea Institute and the Department of International and European Law of Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and sponsored by the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration under the Ministry of Land, Transportation & Marin Affairs, the Korea Foundation, and the Korean Culture and Information Service. One of the most important results of this seminar was to confirm the official decision for the use of both names East Sea and Sea of Japan in the textbooks and the teaching guidelines of Austria.

Press Conference on Old Japanese Maps and Urgent Academic Conference on the Announced Results of Japanese Textbook Authorization Old Japanese Maps Debunk the Myth that 'Dokdo is an Inherent Territory of Japan' On March 27, 2012, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology announced the 2011 high school textbook authorization results. A total of 39 social studies textbooks have been authorized, and 21 of them described Japan's unjustified sovereignty claim over Dokdo. Not that the description itself of the claim that "Dokdo is a Japanese territory" in the Japanese textbooks is anything new; the description that Dokdo is a Japanese territory was already included in all of the middle school geography and social studies textbooks of Japan authorized last year, and the official position of the Japanese government on Dokdo is also that 'Dokdo is an inherent territory of Japan but illegally occupied by Korea.' But what is noteworthy in the recently authorized Japanese textbooks is the increasing emphasis on the claim that Dokdo is 'an inherent territory of Japan.' The number of authorized high school textbooks that included such claim increased from 2 to 9. The same number for the middle school textbooks authorized in 2011 had also increased from 2 to 8.

일본의 '보통국가화' 움직임과 일본주의
National Studies and Japanism Recently, there are signs of attempts observed around Japan to step out of the 'non-military nation' or 'democratic nation' track laid out by the allies after World War II. Earlier, Ozawa Ichiro called for making Japan an ordinary nation. And recently, the 'Osaka Restoration Club' led by Osaka Mayor Hashimoto Toru (橋本徹) is also dreaming of a national revolution. In addition, schools for aspiring politicians are mushrooming in Tokyo and other regions across the country. The 'Eight Point Plan (船中八策), the booklet of pledges for the House of Representatives election campaigns presented by the Osaka Restoration Club, as suggested by its title taken from the 'Eight Point Plan' by Sakamoto Ryoma from the late shogunate period, may have been so named to project the image of building a new country. The Eight Point Plan consists of noteworthy points, including 1) improvement of the ruling body, 4) reform of education, 7) reform of diplomacy/defence, and 8) 'revision of the constitution.'

The Significance of Genghis Khan and the Great Mongol Empire in World History There are periods of time in human history that, from global perspectives, are unmistakably remarkable in terms of territory or philosophy of the time. The period of the Great Mongol Empire of Genghis Khan is one of them. Once Genghis Khan came along, the regions east and west of the Eurasian continent came under control of Mongolia whether they liked it or not. The regions extending as far as the East Sea to the east and Russia, Anatolia, and the eastern Mediterranean coasts to the west became the territories of Mongolia. Even Western Europe, Egypt, India, Southeast Asia, and Japan, regions that were not under direct control of Mongolia, were also in contact with Mongolia for exchange in various areas including politics, economy, culture, art, science, philosophy, and religion. Almost all the regions of the world were influenced by Mongolia whether they liked it or not. Indeed, it was the era of Mongolia.

한국-베트남 협력포럼, 동아시아의 역사와 과제를 재조명하다
The Korea-Vietnam Cooperation Forums, Reviews the History and Challenges of East Asia On March 27, 2012, the 3rd Korea-Vietnam Cooperation Forum between the Northeast Asian History Foundation (NAHF) and the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) was held in the VASS located in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam under the theme "Maritime Security and Peace in East Asia: Sharing Historical Experiences and Research Results." This international conference raised the academic profile of the NAHF abroad in that it was hosted by the VAAS itself, not a research institute affiliated with it, and that it presented the NAHF's research capability in "maritime territory of East Asia" as well as "history of East Asia." The conference began with the opening speech by VASS Director Nguyen Xuan Thang.

Answer Ironically, the purpose of studying wars in history and remembering them from the perspective of today is to explore the conditions and philosophy of peace. The Imjin War is not an exception. In this regard, this year, marking the 420th anniversary of the outbreak of the war, is a year for us to refresh our commitment and vision to peace.
