The Recent Political Landscape of Northeast Asia and the Korean Peninsula : On the Occasion of the 67th Year after Korea's Liberation from Japan Sixty-seven years have passed since Korea was liberated from Japan's colonial rule but divided into the North and the South by the Allies. In those years, the Republic of Korea has joined the ranks of developed countries by achieving remarkable growth and development praised and envied by many countries around the world. In contrast, the 'Democratic People's Republic of Korea' is deep in a state of debilitation beyond depression.

'Big History,' a New Paradigm for the World and History The Second Congress of the Asian Association of World Historians (AAWH), sponsored by the NAHF, was held in April 2012 under the two themes 'Global Exchange Networks of Asia' and 'Alternative Modernities in Asia.' It was the largest in scale of all history-related conferences ever held in Korea. Professor Cho Ji-hyung at Ewha Womans University, elected the next president of the AAWH during this event, talks about the Second AAWH Congress and its significance in an interview with NAHF Research Fellow Kim Min-kyu.

동북아해양평화벨트 구축 국제학술회의 "동아시아의 전쟁 기억, 트라우마를 넘어서"
International Conference for the Northeast Asian Peace Belt "Beyond the Memories of War in East Asia as a Trauma" On July 12 and 13, 2012, an international conference, co-hosted by the NAHF and the Center for Korean Studies at Inha University under the theme "Beyond the Memories of War in East Asia as a Trauma: Communication and Cooperation through Wars in East Asia," was held at the International Conference Room in the Jungseok Memorial Library of Inha University. For the grand purpose of 'creating a peace belt in Northeast Asia,' the NAHF has been hosting international conferences over the last five years to form a common historical perception, with focus on the theme 'wars and exchanges in East Asia,' thereby promoting mutual understanding among East Asian countries as well as seeking ways to create a peace community in the future.

『Land in Old Maps』, a Complete Guide to the Korean Old Maps of Land and Territory The Northeast Asian History Foundation has published 『Land in Old Maps』, an atlas of old maps made in Korea prior to 1910. It features the old maps from home and abroad that are used for the research of land and territory and have an important position in the development of Korean cartography. The Korean Research Association of Old Maps and the Institute of Busan Geography were commissioned to research and edit this atlas. And the chief editor was Kim Ki-hyuk, a professor of geography education at the Pusan National University.A Bulky Atlas Running a Total of 510 Pages For a start, Land in Old Maps, is a bulky atlas in the A3 format running up to 510 pages. Trends in China's New 'Plans for the Three Regions' and Korean Academia's Understanding Thereof As part of their efforts to stress 'One China,' as exemplified in their use of such various terms as 'the united pluralistic society of the Chinese nation,' 'the great family of the Chinese nation' and 'unified multi-ethnic nation,' the Chinese academia launched projects from 2002 whereby the mainland China would be essentially divided into Inland (內疆) and Borderland (邊疆) areas, in addition to the existing China-Taiwan demarcation. This is a more traditional approach than the economic-geographic division of China into the 'East (東部)' and the 'West (西部).'
