How Should We Overcome the Conflicts among Korea, China, and Japan? This year of 2014 marks the 120th year since the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), the 110th year since the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), and the 100th year since World War I (1914-1918). And the month of October is particularly significant because it includes the date (Oct 26) when, 115 years ago at Harbin Station in China, patriot Ahn Jung-geun assassinated Ito Hirobhumu, the mastermind behind Japan's aggression against Korea. This month of October inspires us to think once again about peace and prosperity in East Asia while reminding ourselves of the Theory of Oriental Peace advocated by Ahn Jung-guen. The Beautiful Hues and Colors Discovered on the Lonely Island of Dokdo Editor's Note: From August 2012 to October 2013, photographer Kim Jung-man documented the four seasons of Dokdo with photography, with cooperation from the Northeast Asian History Foundation, the Korea Coast Guard, and the Office of Ulleng-gun. The photographs taken during this period were displayed at the photo exhibition '1-96 Dokdo-ri Ulleung-eup Ulleung-gun Gyeongsangbuk-do Korea' held at the main exhibition hall (B1) of the Sejong Museum of Fine Art from July 29 to August 11, 2014, attracting up to 10,000 visitors over the short period of two weeks. NAHF-KIMS Joint Academic Seminar Multi-faceted Measures to Protect Sovereignty over Dokdo and the East Sea On August 14, 2014, the Northeast Asian History Foundation and the Korea Institute for Maritime Strategy (KIMS) co-hosted the academic conference on 'Protection of Sovereignty over Dokdo and Maritime Security.' The purpose of this event was to examine and discuss our protection of sovereignty over Dokdo and readiness for marine security in response to Japan's provocations, such as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to the shrine, its attempt to verify the Kono Statement, its declaration of the right to collective self-defense, its laying claims to Doko, and its complaint to the Korean navy's exercise on the sea near Dokdo.

Press Coverage of Dokdo-Related Old Maps and its Problems With the increasing public interest in Dokdo, news articles related to Dokdo cover various contents unlike in the past. There is a deluge of articles from a variety of areas, including international politics, certain politicians' behaviors in relation to Dokdo, the ecology and the life of residents of Dokdo, and the Dokdo issue related to national defense. Quite a few of these articles feature old maps related to Dokdo.With the increasing importance of old maps as evidence of sovereignty and the discovery of Dokdo-related old maps at home and abroad, the press reveals these maps as evidence confirming our sovereignty over Dokdo. Since they can visually attract public attention, articles featuring old maps often appear not only in central daily newspapers but also in local newspapers, online media, and national TV. 장수왕 재위 79년, 평화의 비결
The Secret to Peace for 79 Years during the Reign of King Jangsu King Jangsu (413-491), the twentieth king of Koguryo, was on the throne for seventy-nine years. It is said that he was ninety-eight years old when he died. Hence his posthumous name Jangsu (長壽), which means longevity. The period of his reign, the fifth century, was an era of turbulence for East Asia. China at the time was in the period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties. In northern China, the Northern Wei Dynasty established by the Tuoba clan of the Xianbei had expanded its power and become a threat to its neighboring countries. Most of the accounts of the King Jangsu era included in History of the Three Kingdoms are about Koguryo's dispatch of envoys to Northern Wei. Why was that?

What is the Lugou Bridge Incident? Lugou Bridge (盧溝橋) is an arch stone bridge over the Yongding River (永定河) that flows southeast of the city of Beijing, China. Completed in 1192 during the Jin Dynasty, the bridge is about 270 meters in length, and has 510 lion statues of different shapes standing along the parapets. Lugou Bridge is also known as Marco Polo Bridge, which originates from The Travels of Marco Polo where Marco Polo described it as "a wonderful stone bridge that can't be found anywhere else."

The Earthenware of Koguryo, the Prototype of the Contemporary Korean Pottery The first appearance of earthenware in our history coincides with the birth of a completely new lifestyle known as agrarian culture in the Neolithic Age. The earthenware made during the Koguryo era are classified into a total of thirty types. They are largely divided into practical containers used for storage, cooking, distribution of food, and transport, and non-practical containers used for burial and rituals. Most characteristically, the earthenware of Koguryo have the invariably flat bottom. In addition, the jar, steamer, plate, bowl, and the like are similar in shape to the traditional earthenware we use today. As it has turned out, their production method is also similar to the modern pottery's, suggesting that the earthenware of Koguryo is the prototype of the traditional pottery used by the contemporary Korean people.

Expert Discussion with Former Prime Minister of Japan Tomiichi Murayama "Agreeing to the solution desired by the victims is key" On August 22, 2014, the Northeast Asian History Foundation hosted an expert discussion on “The Korean and Japanese Perceptions of History and the Pursuit of the Solution to the 'Comfort Women' Issue.” Since Shinzo Abe took office as Prime Minister of Japan, his controversial historical perception has been the cause of Japan's continued conflicts with Korea and with China. In particular, there are concerns about the possibility that in 2015, the 70th year since the end of World War II, he might issue the 'Abe Statement' as a revision to the Murayama Statement of 1995 by which Japan acknowledged the damage and suffering it had caused the peoples of Asian countries through its colonial rule and aggression, and expressed the feelings of apology and remorse. If these concerns become a reality, it is likely to shatter Japan's relationship, not only with Korea but with the rest of Asia.

International Conference to Cope with Japan's Rightward Shift and the Yasukuni Issue The Candlelight Cutting into the Darkness of Yasukuni Will Never Go Out An international conference on "Peace in East Asia and Yasukuni Shrine" to cope with Japan's rightward shift and the Yasukuni issue was held at the National Assembly on August 21, 2014. Japanese cabinet ministers and politicians have continued to make annual visits to Yasukuni Shrine, including Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit in December 2013, and they granted the right to collective self-defense by a cabinet decision in July 2014. Against this background, those who had been involved in the anti-Yasukuni movement through international alliance gathered together and arranged this conference in order to diagnose the current status of the Yasukini issue and present an outlook for future alliance activities.
