The sheep are known to be highly social animals that live in groups and fit well in their community. It is my hope that like the sheep that are friendly-looking and gentle-natured, it will be a year of peace and health in harmony with neighbors.Obviously, the year 2015 is of exceptional significance to us, for it is exactly seventy years ago that our country gained independence from Imperial Japan. Over the past seventy years, there have been difficulties, large and small, and ups and downs. Labor Draft Cases Differing from Country to Country Require a Climate Conducive to Joint Research Editor's Note: On November 20, 2014, the NAHF hosted an international conference on “Justice or reality: The post-war treatment of the WWII Japan's labor draft history in East and Southeast Asia.” One of the participants in this conference, Professor Hui-yu Caroline Ts’ai from Taiwan studying labor draft, gave an interview with Research Fellow Lee, Chang Wook at the NAHF to talk about Imperial Japan's exploitation during the early 20th century, which would cause historical conflict in East Asia, and how it was dealt with after the war.Hui-yu Caroline Ts’ai (蔡慧玉) Senior ResearcherShe received her bachelor's and master's degrees from the National Taiwan University and her Ph.D from Columbia University in the U.S. She is currently working at the Institute of Taiwan History under Academia Sinica. Her major is in Taiwan history during the period of Japanese imperialism and the social history of modern and contemporary China. Her areas of study include the labor draft that happened in Taiwan

International Conference for Historical Reconciliation and Peace Building in Northeast Asia Beyond Historical Conflict and Toward a Peace Community The Northeast Asian History Foundation and the Association of Korean-Japanese National Studies co-hosted an international conference on “International Wars and Peace Systems in Modern and Contemporary East Asia" at the NAHF's Grand Conference Hall on November 14, 2014.Oftentimes, war is at the root of conflict between countries. From the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries, a series of wars swept across many countries in the East Asian region, leaving them with conflicts and confrontations that they are still struggling to deal with today. Meanwhile, there has been a proposal in East Asia to create an 'East Asian Community' for peace building within the region, but little progress has been made because a sufficiently strong base of trust hasn't been built yet.About ten scholars from Korea and Japan participated in this international conference for keynote speeches, presentations, and discussions on Part 1 'Revisiting International Wars in Modern and Contemporary East Asia’ and Part 2 ‘

Revisiting the Fifty Years of the Agreement between South Korea and Japan IIIThe Half Century of the Korea-Japan Agreement as the Starting Point for Realizing a Peace Community On June 22, 2014, the 49th anniversary of the conclusion of the Korea-Japan Agreement, the NAHF published the third volume of Revisiting the Fifty Years of the Agreement between South Korea and Japan, subtitled 'Revisiting the Decisions on Imperial Japan's Colonial Responsibility and the Korea-Japan Agreement System.'Assuming that Imperial Japan's colonial rule was legal, Japan is denying their colonial responsibility itself for the damage done to 'comfort women' and the victims of the draft and claiming that whatever responsibility there was has been settled by the Korea-Japan Agreement.But the Korean judicial branch, including the Constitutional Court and Supreme Court of Korea, made the following notable decisions. The Grave Keepers of Koguryo, Guards of the Royal Mausoleums ▲ A whole view of Taewangneung (Mausoleum of the Great King)Grave keepers (守墓人) literally refer to those who keep the graves. It was their job to keep the graves of dead people, and do the cleaning and prepare for the rituals. Almost every country had a system in place for staffing and managing the royal mausoleums of kings of many generations. Samguksaki (History of the Three Kingdoms) includes an account explaining that in Koguryo or Silla, when a king or a high-ranking aristocrat died, grave keepers were assigned to his grave. It also includes a reference to 'Neungsaekjeon (陵色典),' presumably the government office in charge of this business. But there is no historical record that tells us in detail about the actual management, or the governing laws, of the royal mausoleums.Instead, this information is found on the Gwanggaeto Stele and the Ji'an (集安) Koguryo Stele. The Koguryo People's Perception of the Universe The Koguryo People's Perception of the UniverseIf the formation and evolution of stars are the subjects of modern astronomy, the pattern of stars in a constellation and its changes are in the realm of archeoastronomy. Many historic relics and sites have pictures of constellations, whose shapes are apparently different between the East and the West, and between China and Koguryo. They were the same stars against the same sky, but portrayed differently from country to country because constellations reflect a collective culture. The most marked difference between countries is found in the portrayals of Polaris, because ancient people, having observed that celestial bodies revolved around it once a day, treated it as the master of the night sky. For instance, Polaris is portrayed as five stars in the Dunhuang Star Chart from the period of the Tang Dynasty of China, but as three stars in the mural painting of Koguryo that was drawn at a time before the Dunhuang Star Chart. ▲ Photo 1

International Conference on the 1,600th Year Since the Erection of the Gwanggaeto Stele The Gwanggaeto Stele's Inscription Attests to the Grandeur of Koguryo The year 2014 marked the 1,600th year since the Gwanggaeto Stele was erected. It is written on the stele's inscription that on September 29, 414 the royal tomb of King Gwanggaeto was created and a stele in honor of the King's achievements was erected to be handed down to posterity. As it so happened, the year 2014 had a leap month in September, such that the date of the stele's erection was repeated at a month's interval (October 22 and November 21 in the solar calendar). In celebration, the Northeast Asian History Foundation hosted the International Conference on the 1,600th Year Since the Erection of the Gwanggaeto Stele on two occasions.

Conference on the 120th Anniversary of the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the Sino-Japanese War The Donghak Peasant Revolution and the Sino-Japanese War as Mirrors into the Future of 21st-Century East Asia Throughout last year, on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the Sino-Japanese War, all kinds of conferences and symposia were held at home and abroad. In particular, the “Conference on the 120th Anniversary of the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the Sino-Japanese War,” co-hosted by the NAHF and the Association for Korean Historical Studies, was designed to advance the empirical study of Japan's aggression and the Korean people's resistance based on the historical records on the Sino-Japanese War newly uncovered since the War's centennial anniversary, building on all the research findings made so far by the academia at home and abroad.
