Baik Young-seo I've been busier than usual again since I started serving as dean of the college of liberal arts at the university I'm teaching at. I would like to consider the job a rare opportunity before I retire, which is pretty soon, to become deeply involved in experimenting with the meaning and potential of the humanities as an academic system.

Shim Heungtaek's Report The Hundred Years Following "Dokdo, Which Belongs to Our County" September 25, 1904. The logbook of the Japanese warship Niitaka (軍艦新高行動日誌), hereinafter the Niitaka Report, which had been dispatched to lay a submarine cable between Ulleungdo and Jukbyeon, records, "Dokdo (獨島) is how the Koreans write the name of Riancodo and our (Japanese) fishermen call the island Riancodo."

Novel Streaks Rising Beyond Banality - The Movie "Spirits' Homecoming" - Since its release on February 24, 2016, the movie Spirits' Homecoming (鬼鄕) is still being shown at movie theaters as of April 15 as this contribution is being written. The number of viewers for the movie has cumulated beyond 3.68 million. It has been a pleasant turnout considering the initial concerns that the movie wouldn't be able to secure enough screens or attract enough viewers. It has also made it easier to discuss the movie here.

Heo Gyun: Maverick or Reformist? Heo Gyun is known as a historical figure who had been much talked about among government officials and scholars during the Joseon period. Let us now find out why he was at the center of attention back then and is still legendary to this day. Heo Gyun was born into a noble family that had served in government positions for generations and famed for exhibiting excellence in scholarship. He followed the family tradition by beginning to study at an early age, was recognized for his gifted talents, and passed the national civil service exam with excellent marks. This sort of background made his success seem guaranteed.

The seminar was attended by the NAHF President Kim Ho-sup, Professor Ha Young-sun at Seoul National University, Professor Hyun In-taek at Korea University, Professor Kim Han-kwon at the Korea National Diplomatic Academy, Professor Kevin O’Brien at UC Berkeley, Professor Daniel C. Sneider at Stanford University, and Dr. Choi Woon-do, director of the NAHF Institute of Japanese Studies.

《The Rationale and Practical Interests Behind Korea's Diplomacy Toward Japan》 Diplomatic Documents and the Korea-Japan Claims Settlement Agreement Although nearly five decades have passed since the 1965 Korea-Japan Claims Settlement Agreement, it still remains a topic of heated disputes. That is because the agreement's interpretation directly affects the outcomes of suits victims of forced mobilization currently filed against Japanese companies to demand reparations, making the interpretation very much a matter of the present rather than of the past.
