The Battle of Gwiju and General Gang Gam-chan

This year marks the 1,000th anniversary of the 1019 Battle of Gwiju. The Battle of Gwiju took place at the fortress of Gwiju where the Goryeo army, led by General Gang Gam-chan, defeated the Khitans. The Khitans had invaded Korea demanding the presence of the Goryeo king at the Khitan’s royal court, as well as the return of six counties in Gangdong. Nakseongdae Park, located in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, is said to be the birthplace of General Gang Gam-chan. The name “Nakseongdae” comes from the folktale that alleges that a big star fell down in that neighborhood on the same day that the general was born. In Nakseongdae Park, there is a three-story stone pagoda from the Goryeo Dynasty called "Anguksa," on which “Gang Gam-chan Nakseongdae” is carved. This pagoda is used as a shrine that preserves a portrait of the general.
