Ceremony to Kick Off the New Year, 2019
On January 2, 2019, the Foundation hosted a ceremony to kick off the new year with executives, including President Kim Dohyung[P1] . In his New Year's address, Mr. Kim expressed hope that the Foundation would be passionate and proactive in terms of both research and administration in the coming year, citing the Chinese idiom, "Geungoyeopmu," meaning, "Strong roots that support a tree with thick leaves." Following this metaphor, he wished that every effort made by the Foundation would result in thick leaves, flowers and fruits.
The 9th Dokdo Awards Ceremony
The Foundation hosted the 9th Dokdo Awards Ceremony in Foundation's the conference room on January 16. The foundation has been giving the Northeast Asian History Foundation's Dokdo Award every year since 2009 to individuals and groups that excel in activities related to Dokdo, in order to encourage and promote research on Dokdo. This year's "I Love Dokdo Awards" were given to Dong-a Mapping Co. Ltd's CEO An Dong-rib, professor Kim Nam-hun of Kongju National University, journalist An Yeong-seon of the Korean Writers’ Association, principal Yun Jae-guk of Saerom High School, and professor Valeriy V. Glushkov of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in recognition of their Dokdo-related activities. The winners were awarded a certificate of merit by the Foundation’s chairman, a plaque, and prize money. Foundation President Kim Dohyung expressed his gratitude for the winners who had voluntarily and enthusiastically took the initiative in protecting Dokdo against Japan's unfair claim of sovereignty of Dokdo. The winners were asked to continue participating in such activities.
End-of-Year Social Welfare Donations
On December 24, during the season of Christmas and the end-of-year holidays, the Foundation delivered KRW 1,000,000 to the Community Chest of Korea to help the low-income and underprivileged individuals of Seodaemun-gu and other areas. The donations, deducted from the Foundation employees' December salaries, will be used to promote local welfare, and to help stabilize the lives of low-income citizens, such as elderly people living alone, disabled individuals and single-parent families in Seodaemun-gu.
2018 Awards Ceremony Honoring Schools Performing Activities to Guard Dokdo
On December 11 in its conference room, the Foundation held an awards ceremony for schools that exhibited excellence in performing activities to protect Dokdo. Of the 90 elementary, middle and high schools that were selected as Dokdo guardian schools, 18 were selected receive awards for the enthusiastic participation in "Loving Dokdo" club activities of both teachers and students. Marking the third of its kind since 2016, the awards ceremony for Dokdo-protecting schools contributes to raising students' awareness and understanding of Dokdo by supporting creative and autonomous club activities in schools.
"Territory and Seas" Selected as a Candidate Journal by National Research Foundation of Korea
"Territory and Seas," a professional academic journal published with the purpose of protecting the territorial sovereignty of Dokdo and spreading the appellation of the East Sea, has been selected as a candidate journal for registration by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF). Candidate journals for registration must meet certain criteria in the NRF's "journal registration scheme," established to create a management system for journals and improve their quality levels. "Territory and Seas" covers academic research and book reviews in the fields of history, geography, international law and social sciences about territorial and maritime issues, including Dokdo and the appellation of the East Sea. This journal is published biannually, in June and December.
