Shaping our relationship with rising China China keeps rising at an amazing speed. Even in 2008 when most countries in the world suffered a negative growth in the midst of a financial crisis, China achieved an 8.7% economic growth. Another financial crisis started in the US last year whose effect is still present, but China's growth continues. China's such remarkable economic growth has given the country more influential power in the international politics. There is still a gap between the US and China in the overall national power on a global scale, and therefore it will be difficult to watch a power transition in the near future. However, it is true that a G-2 system has been formed in Northeast Asia including the Korean peninsula, the most important part of the region surrounding China. Now China aims to set the game rules for this region instead of just accepting the rules set by the US. Such changes were reflected in China's unsupportive diplomatic responses to the sinking of the Cheonan warship in 2010 and the shelling of the Yeonpyeong Island.

"Politically biased education on Dokdo in foreign countries should not be allowed." Last September, CHOI Jwa-Seong, a Korean compatriot living in America, filed an administrative lawsuit against a private school in the US teaching 'Dokdo is illegally occupied by Korea', the educational authority in charge and the state government of New Jersey. Northeast Asian History Foundation's research fellow KIM Yong-Hwan interviewed Attorney KIM Bong-Joon who was preparing for the lawsuit to find his position and listen to the litigation status.

Joint Academic Conference by Northeast Asian History Foundation and International Research Center for Japanese Studies Korea-Japan joint academic conference for discussions on ancient history On last September 30, Northeast Asian History Foundation held a joint academic conference with International Research Center for Japanese Studies under a title "Exchanges and mutual understanding between Korea and Japan in ancient times". Such a conference did not exist in recent years in which Korea-Japan relations have been dealt with by only a group of researchers specializing in ancient histories. While Korea-Japan relations center around the recent 100 years, it is difficult to understand the true historical image of the modern years without knowing the ancient histories at the root.

The 3rd regular academic conference between Korea and Russia Seeking ways for exchanges and cooperation between Korea and Russia From last September 19 to September 22, a 3rd Korea-Russia regular academic conference was jointly held in Vladivostok by Northeast Asian History Foundation and the History, Archeology and Folklore Research Center at the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences under the title of "Exchanges and cooperation between Korea and Russia for reconciliation of history in East Asia".

Chinese research on the international relations history of Balhae In a sense, both Korea and China have each understood Balhae's history as part of their own histories for long. A state of 'one history used for both countries' continued peacefully. Then, China pushed ahead with its 'Northeast Project', which sparked refutations and attacks from both sides on each other's views and interpretations of Balhae's history. Such attacks and defenses still continue.

YI Seun-Hyu, an intellectual of Goryeo, a country different from China Yi Seung-Hyu was born in 1224 (the 11th year of King Gojong) during the military rule of the Choi family. He lived until 1300 (the 26th year of King Chungryeol) when Goryeo was suffering from the oppressive rule of Yuan Dynasty of China. He lost his father when he was still a child, but he studied hard and was selected in a government officials recruitment test. He moved into a place called Gudong of the Duta Mountain in present Samcheok, Gangwon-do where he lived plowing a field himself and supporting his mother. In 1273 he was selected as the official in charge of records for a diplomatic delegation to the Yuan Dynasty. During the reign of King Chungryeol, he criticized wrong politics of that time in 15 items followed by another petition presented to the king who was not pleased with it and dismissed him. He then returned to Samcheok and retired from the public life. Characterized with his honesty, he was not greedy for the world and liked the teachings of Buddhism.

My trip to Korea and study of the ancient history On last September 30, a Korea-Japan international academic conference was hosted by Northeast Asian History Foundation. Luckily, I too had an opportunity to make a presentation. After the conference, I visited Baekje's sites in Iksan, Buyeo and Gongju for two days from October 1 to October 2.I was deeply impressed with the developed scenes of Korea which I was revisiting 35 years after my previous trip. Thinking about the exchanges between ancient Japan and Baekje, I got deeply moved by the past.
