The Inconvenient Truth about the Friendship between Korea and China In summer, I was sitting in an express train from Nanjing to Shanghai, when the Chinese passenger sitting in front of me handed me a newspaper, a tabloid called Dongfang Daily. One page of the newspaper was devoted to an interview with Han Sheng (韓昇), Professor of History at Fudan University, titled ‘As early as in the Tang Dynasty, China helped Korea fend off Japan's invasion.' It turned out to be a special section on the history of China and Korea, also featuring a box that included a comment on the Imjin War written by another researcher at Fudan University and as many as five war-related photos. As I was skimming through the interview, I kept thinking that it didn't feel quite right.Some parts of Professor Han Sheng's interview are worthy of attention. To begin with, the term 'help' in the title seems to relate to the Battle of Baekgang, which he claims to be a war that China fought in support of Silla against Japan's invasion. The 20th International Seminar on Sea NamesDiscussing the Naming of the East Sea in Terms of Fairness and Humanism The 20th International Seminar on Sea Names, co-organized by the Northeast Asian History Foundation and the Society for East Sea, was held in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, Korea from the 26th to the 29th of October, 2014The first seminar was held in 1994 for the purpose of spreading the discussion aimed at establishing the name East Sea as an international standard, and the NAHF has been involved as a co-organizer since 2007. Recent seminars over the past ten years have been held in major cities around the world. This year, celebrating its 20th anniversary, the seminar was held in the special location of Gyeongju, a city close to the East Sea. A Review of Territorial Issues in East Asia with the Theory of 'Structural Realism' The situation of international politics in East Asia is alarming. The China-Japan diplomatic conflict, sparked by the clash with Chinese fishing vessels on the waters around the Senkaku Islands in September 2010, became worse when the Japanese government 'nationalized' three of the Senkaku Islands in September 2012. When China unilaterally established the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) in November 2013, Japan attempted to lift the Consitutional constraint on its exercise of the right of collective self-defense while closely watching China's every subsequent move. Commenting on the increasingly serious territorial dispute in East Asia due to the China-Japan clash over the Senkakus, Korean media drew a parallel, quoting Foreign Policy, a U.S. news magazine focused on current affairs, with the Balkan crisis where the rise of nationalism and the intensifying territorial conflict had eventually triggered a world war.As an observer of this serious diplomatic war unfold

The Boma Fortress of Balhae The Boma Fortress is currently located in Boma Village (寶馬村), Antu County, the Jilin Province of China. A description of the status of the excavation and relics of this fortress can be found in Antu County Cultural Gazetteer (安圖縣文物志) (1985). The Boma Fortress is a flatland fortress with a total perimeter of 465 meters (126 meters along the eastern wall; 132 meters along the western wall; 103 meters along the southern wall; and 104 meters along the northern wall). The fortress has walls and stylobates made of stone with soil on top of them. The remaining northern wall is 4 meters wide and 1.2 meters high, and it is preserved in a relatively good condition. The area surrounding the fortress has already turned into farmland. Ten meters away from the northern wall, there is a road leading to Boma Village. In the middle of the fortress, there are three earthen stylobates standing in a row.

선조들의 영토 의식
Our Ancestors' Perception of Territory Maps are an extremely important part of our heritage in that they show us the boundaries of the world and territory as perceived by people at the time. A map made in the late 18th century, 'Agukchongdo (我國總圖: meaning Complete Map of Our Country) follows the Principle of Five Elements, marking the names of counties and prefectures in five colors corresponding to their five points on the map: Blue for the East (Gangwon Province); White for the West (Hwanghae Province); Red for the South (Jeolla and Gyeongsang Provinces); Black for the North (Hamgyeong Province); and Yellow for the Center (Gyeonggi and Chungcheong Provinces). This map expressed the mountains, rivers, and seas with attention to detail, even marking the names of small islands. The seas were marked as the East Sea, the West Sea, and the South Sea, according to their location. And Dokdo was marked as Usan (于山). The map contains an interesting note that reads: "Given a favorable wind, it is only two days' sail from land to Ulleungdo."

International Conference on Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Army Finding the Path to Historical Reconciliation by Sharing Historical Memories An international conference on “Sharing the Lessons and Memories of Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Army" was held at the NAHF Grand Conference Hall on October 14, 2014. The objectives of this event were to learn lessons from the horrors of Unit 731 and to share memories of that brutality and pass them down to future generations. In Korea, the phrase ‘Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Army’ is often associated with the word 'Maruta,' but nothing specific about it is known. Chinese scholars estimate that Unit 731 and other Japanese biological warfare units killed over 10,000 Chinese and Koreans in medical experiments during World War II. Of these victims, about 200 Koreans are thought to have been killed as 'Maruta.' But there are only six Korean victims whose identity has been confirmed.

Academic Conference Exploring Directions for East Asian History/Territory Education and Training Calling for the Development of Many Kinds of Various Programs for All Walks of Life from School Teachers to Civil Servants The Northeast Asia/Dokdo Education & Training Center hosted an academic conference on "Exploring Directions for East Asian History/Territory Education and Training" on November 4, 2014. The purpose of this conference, in connection with the Ministry of Education and the National Assembly of Korea's announcement of the initiative to 'foster people talented in history' for the protection of historical sovereignty, was to discuss how the NAHF should conduct education on the issues of Northeast Asian history and territory.
