취임사
Inaugural Speech I am Chang Won-sam, the 8th Secretary General of NAHF. NAHF is a national research institute established in September 2006 for the development of research and policies on Northeast Asia's history and Dokdo, and for peaceful and co-prosperous East Asia. NAHF has experienced various challenges. But NAHF has overcome its difficulties by advancing and achieving in research and projects in the territories, oceans and history sectors. This is the result of the dedicated efforts of former and current NAHF members.

Western Academic Perceptions on the History of Goguryeo The basic perception of the history of the Tang Dynasty is well expressed in the preface of 『Perspectives on the Tʻang』 by Arthur F. Wright and Denis Twitchett, published in 1973. The Chinese Empire has a history of thousands of years. Among them, the Tang Dynasty is one of the great times. … How can we explain this tremendous vitality? The first is the eclecticism of the Tang dynasty. This was the way the Tang Dynasty gathered various cultures in one place from the confusing history of the last 400 years. The second is the internationality of the Tang Dynasty. In other words, this was openness that accepted all kinds of foreign influences. Due to these characteristics, the Tang civilization has a universal appeal.

Western Academic Perceptions on the History of Balhae At the beginning of the 21st century, the perception of Korean history that Chinese scholars had had shocked Korea. 『The Cambridge History of China』 approaches Korean history on a different level from China. This book shows the perception of Western academia about Chinese history and Korean history. The West does not see the relationship between China and Balhae as a national relationship in China; they recognize it as an international relationship, such as Japan, Silla, Goryeo, and Southeast Asia.

A Study on the History of Goryeo in Western Academics Recently, Korean films, dramas, music, and other popular cultures have become popular, and universities in the West have opened Korean-related courses and Korean studies have developed greatly. However, Korean studies are still biased toward linguistics, literature, sociology, politics, economics, and international relations. In particular, the Korean history field focuses on the 20th century, including colonial rule, the Korean War, economic development and democratization movements, and Korea-US relations. Furthermore, the Korean history major of the pre-modern period in the West has been concentrated in the late Joseon Dynasty since the 18th century. More than 60 Korean-related panels are seen at the Association for Asian Studies annual conference in Hawaii, March 2023. However, there are only three panels before the 19th century and only one panel in the Goryeo period.

Western Academic Interest in the Relationship between Korea and China in the Joseon Dynasty Western academics' interest in the relationship between Korea and China in the Joseon Dynasty was mostly concentrated during the opening of the port(1876). This is because the 19th century is the starting point of interest in the East Asian international order. Interest in pre-modern times began in earnest after World War II, and in 1969, the book "The Chinese World Order" laid the foundation. It is the Korean scholar Jeon Hae-jong who wrote a chapter on the relationship between Joseon and Qing in this book. His view greatly influenced the perception of the relationship between Korea and China during the pre-modern period of Western academia. Over the next half century, a paper on the relationship between Korea and China in the Joseon Dynasty was often published. Among the perceptions shared by these studies, I briefly introduce three things that domestic academia will be interested in.

조선 후기 ‘왜관’의 세계
The World of Waegwan in the Late Joseon Dynasty Waegwan(倭館), built to accommodate Japanese who come to Korea, has a long history. It was 1407(Taejong 7), not long after the founding of Joseon. Joseon limited the port of entry of the Japanese trade ship to Busanpo(busan city) and Jepo(busan city), and built Waegwan to allow Japanese who entered there to stay and trade. In 1418, Yeompo(ulsan city) was opened. So the so-called 'era of Sampo Waegwan' started.

고구려의 발상지 '환인'
The Origin of Goguryeo 'Huanren' In 1914, Shin Chae-ho was in exile after leaving the Joseon Dynasty. He was invited by Yoon Se-bok and went to Dongchang School in Huanren(桓仁), Liaoning Province, China. It was nine years after Torii Ryuzo of Tokyo Imperial University visited here. And it was only a year since Torii, who investigated this place again, said that 'Ohnyeosanseong(五女山城) is the city of Goguryeo'. Shin Chae-ho stayed in Huanren for a year and lived as a teacher at Dongchang School. He visited the Goguryeo ruins of Jian City in Jilin Province and looked around the Monument of King Gwanggaeto, but he did not leave a word about the Goguryeo ruins in Huanren. Maybe he did not know that this was the birthplace of Goguryeo.

Zhuang People 'Kim' Finding Korean Ancestry One spring in 2005, Yuan Li, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told me. “Renxi! A Zhuang People in Debao County, Guangxi Province is trying to find Korean ancestors. He’s visited several embassies and has not found his ancestors yet.” When I first heard this, I thought I had heard it wrong. Zhuang People is a southern ethnic group residing in Guangxi Province, in the southernmost part of China. Debao County is a famous place for mini-horse. In 『Book of the Later Han(後漢書)』, Hui(濊) has a record of being “There's a guo xiama, three feet tall and small enough to pass under fruit trees”. I thought the mini horse was guo xiama, so I was interested in Debao.

NAHF NEWS NAHF held the New Year ceremony on January 3, 2022. President Lee Young-ho said he hopes to overcome the historical conflicts and confrontations in Northeast Asia and to be a year of collecting methods and wisdom for solving problems. Secretary General Chang Won-sam cited the word 'One must live the way one thoughts or end up thinking the way one has lived.' He emphasized the subjective attitude and sincerity.
