Joint Symposium "The Provisional Government, Republicanism and Historical Reconciliation: Korea and Poland in Comparative Perspective"


On May 24, the Northeast Asian History Foundation jointly hosted a symposium at its grand conference hall with the Institute of East-Central Europe from Poland under the theme "The Provisional Government, Republicanism and Historical Reconciliation: Korea and Poland in Comparative Perspective." Papers were presented by the Polish experts Vice Rector Mariusz Wołos (Pedagogical University of Krakow), Monika Rudas-Grodzka (Polish Academy of Sciences' Institute for Literary Studies), Professor Rafał Wnuk (John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin), Doctor Marek Radziwon (Institute of East-Central Europe), Director Miroslaw Filipowicz (Institute of East-Central Europe) as well as the Korean experts Professor Han See-joon (Dankook University), Professor Yun Dae-won (Seoul National University), Shin Ju-baek (Yonsei University), and Kim Jeong-in (Chuncheon National University of Education). The symposium served as an opportunity to compare Korea and Poland's experiences and review the international significance of establishing a provisional government and implementing modern republicanism. The symposium's participants also sought to ascertain the characteristics of historical disputes in Northeast Asia and explore ways to resolve them.

NAHF Secretary General Lee Hyun-ju Retires

 

On June 14, a ceremony for the 6th NAHF Secretary General Lee Hyun-ju's retirement was held at the Foundation's grand conference hall. NAHF President Kim Do-hyung offered a speech commending Lee for passionately dedicating himself to the Foundation's growth and development and hoping for his continued interest in the Foundation's activities in the future. On behalf of the rest of the NAHF staff, Director Nam Sang-gu of the NAHF Institute of Japanese Studies also gave a speech expressing gratitude toward Lee for pointing out meaningful challenges the Foundation should face in order to grow and evolve. In return, Lee gave a speech that shared what he felt after serving as secretary general for the past three years and conveyed his hopes that the Foundation's expertise and potential can be used to develop educational resources for Koreans and Korean diplomats abroad to help correct historical distortions.
