Joint Academic Conference on the 1,100th Anniversary of Goryeo's Foundation
On July 25, the Northeast Asian History Foundation jointly hosted an academic conference at Korea University with the Korean Medieval History Society to discuss "The Goryeo Dynasty in East Asia: Goryeo's National Identity and World View." Presentations at the conference were made on Goryeo's awareness of its national boundaries as the successor of Koguryo, the Goryeo monarchy's world view through the term "Emperor to the East of the Sea," Goryeo's national holidays and sense of national pride, and Goryeo's use of Chinese era names and its understanding of the outside. While considering the presentations during the general discussion that followed, new directions for research were suggested such as looking into Goryeo's cultural pluralism, its recognition of itself and others, the multi-layered recognition of Goryeo borders, and applying civilization theories. The discussion aimed at adopting objective views to gain a more balanced understanding of the histories of Korea and East Asia.
