The Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in the United Nations General Assembly in December 1948, was a consequence of the whole world uniting to prevent the recurrence of the world-known tragedies and atrocities similar to those committed during World War II by the Axis Powers. The U.N. General Assembly adopted the “Basic Principles and Guidelines on the Right to a Remedy and Reparation for Victims of Gross Violations of International Human Rights Law and Serious Violations of International Humanitarian Law” unanimously to declare that the victims of human rights abuse have the right to claim direct damages against the state, companies, and individuals. However, even 70 years after the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the human rights problems of Korea’s forced labor and sexual slavery victims still remain unresolved.
