Problems in Japan’s Attempt to Inscribe the Sado Mines on the World Heritage List

newsletter March 2022

On February 1, 2022, the Japanese government submitted a letter of recommendation to UNESCO for inscribing the Sado Mines at Niigata Prefecture on the World Heritage List. The Sado Mines was where numerous Koreans were forced to labor and suffered during the Pacific War. The number of confirmed Korean victims dragged to the Sado Mines reached over 1,500. Nonetheless, the Japanese government ignores the fact that Koreans were mobilized by force by using gimmicks such as limiting the period for the World Heritage listing to before the Meiji Period. Even former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe provoked this issue by calling it a “war of history.” Government institutions, including the foundation, academic circles, and media, immediately criticized Japan's inscription attempt and began to act in response to it.
