Development of Educational Materials in Line with the Centennial of the March 1st Movement for Primary, Middle, and High School Students and Teachers

재단 뉴스

Marking the centennial of the March 1st Movement, the Foundation developed education materials for students and teachers that can be used in primary, middle, and high schools, and distributed them online. These materials were classified as information for student and teachers and are intended to help boost research- and activity-oriented studies based on historical data. As a variety of commemorative projects have been conducted throughout society on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Movement, primary, middle and high school students – the force driving our future generations – must broadly understand the meaning and value of the Independence Declaration and the significance of the March 1st Movement. Anyone can download the materials at the Foundation’s Northeast Asian History website (contents.nahf.or.kr) without having to sign up for a membership.

In commemoration of the centennial of the March 1st Movement and the establishment of the Provisional Government, the Foundation will hold the “Special Exhibition: Maps of the East Sea and Dokdo” in the Special Exhibition Hall of the National Library of Korea, Sejong, for 18 days, from March 28 through April 14. Held as part of the Dokdo outreach programs celebrating the Dokdo education week, the exhibition was planned to help people understand the history of Dokdo and its rightful territorial sovereignty. The exhibition will display a variety of relics and remains, including a transcribed copy of King Gwanggaeto’s epitaph, records of ancient writings, such as “Annals of King Taejong,” and maps made both at home and abroad. Additionally, the exhibition will serve as an occasion to reconfirm the historical nature of the East Sea and the Korean territory of Dokdo. Visitors will be able to make memories at activity zones that will offer an experience of Dokdo through virtual reality, puzzles, and other interesting programs.

YTN broadcast “Suto, Great History of Defense,” a special documentary about the day of the March 1st Independence Movement and produced under the Foundation’s sponsorship, aired on March 2, 2019. The Ulleungdo Suto during the Joseon period was an institution through which the central government sent officers to manage and defend Ulleungdo. The documentary follows the Suto system during the Joseon period, and records related to Suto officers, while looking into people’s awareness about Dokdo and Ulleungdo during the Joseon Dynasty. The documentary reveals, through various data, the fact that Joseon continuously dispatched Suto officers to the islands, and the fact that Joseon managed both Ulleungdo and Dokdo as Joseon’s own land. Narratives related to inspectors and Suto officers who had produced outstanding achievements, such as Lee Gyu-won and Jang Han-sang, are quite impressive. The 25-minute documentary can be viewed on YNT’s website.

The Foundation’s Research Center on Korean Military Comfort Women has published the “Catalogue Series of Data on Japanese Military Comfort Women” in four volumes. The series has been catalogued after compiling data the Foundation has collected since its inception used to delve into damage caused by the use of comfort women and materials related to comfort women reported to academia as of the end of 2018. To help figure out the whole picture of comfort women, the series is divided into data from Japan (top and bottom), data from allies, and data from China, Taiwan, Thailand and other regions, which will hopefully help deepen and spread research on comfort women in the future.
