Jar with a Bulging Belly

The featured jar is a Balhae relic discovered during the 2012-2013 investigation of tomb no. 24 in district no. 4 of Hoeryong, North Hamgyong province. Hoeryong is the area where Neolithic and Bronze Age relics and remains have been uncovered and also where the old fortresses and tombs from the kingdoms of Koguryo, Balhae, and Joseon are located. Tomb no. 24 in district no. 4 is built above ground with a corridor and a single stone chamber covered by an earthen mound. The jar with a bulging belly was found in the middle section of the tomb's chamber.

Made out of soft mud, the jar's exterior appears to be black. It stands on a flat bottom with a slender neck, wide mouth, and a bulging belly that appears to be slightly elongated. The jar is 21.6 cm high, 0.4 cm thick, and has diameters of 14.4 cm at the mouth, 10 cm at the bottom, and 17 cm at the belly.
