Excavation of Balhae's Yeomju Castle
Relics uncovered from Yeomju Castle and an aerial view of the site where the Northeast Asian History Foundation (NAHF) has been involved in excavations since 2006.
Yeomju Castle was an administrative post under Yeomju (鹽州), one of the four counties belonging to the ancient Korean kingdom Balhae's eastern capital Donggyeong yongwonbu (東京龍原府). Along the 1.38 kilometer perimeter are castle gates reinforced with outer works facing the east, west, and south. The Russian Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography of the Peoples of the Far East began excavating the hilly northwestern section of Yeomju castle since 1980. Since its establishment in 2006, NAHF joined Russia's excavation and has helped uncover various relics and architectural traces including camel bones, a bronze camel figurine, a bronze mirror, a fulling block, and stones used to build a floor heating system. NAHF has so far published a total of nine reports on the Yeomju Castle excavation as well as a monograph titled "Tales of Yeomju Castle."
