A campaign to investigate cases in which the name Dokdo and the East Sea is miswritten and to correct the name.
In March 2005, the Japanese government enacted Takeshima Day. So, people gathered to recognize the importance and seriousness of sovereignty over Dokdo. From then on, they began activities to publicize the territorial sovereignty of Dokdo to the world. The Japanese government lobbied Dokdo, claiming it was Takeshima. This was the occasion for the launch of the International Solidarity for the Protection of Dokdo, which said it would protect sovereignty over Dokdo with 7 million overseas Koreans.
And they decided to establish the Dokdo Academy in preparation for the Japanese government to enforce education on Takeshima, and to carry out domestic and international campaigns to revise and replace the Japanese government's illegal activities of marking territory. With the world's conscientious intellectuals, journalists and citizens, we have taken our first steps to disclose Japan's injustice of distorting history.
International missions to promote Dokdo are being explained at Harvard University.
Dokdo Academy, where there is an intelligence to practice
Dokdo is a history and territory of the Korean peninsula that has lived with the Korean people. However, Japan teaches that Dokdo is Japan's land and Dokdo is illegally occupied by Korea through history textbooks for middle and high schools. They are enacting Takeshima Day and strengthening their attempts to make Dokdo annexed island every year. <DEFENSE OF JAPAN>, the Annual White Paper of the Japan Ministry of Defense, even defines Dokdo as a territory of Japan and a subject to be recaptured. Moreover, there are overwhelmingly many cases in the world's leading atlas, journals, etc. that are described as Takesima than the case that is described as Dokdo.
In this background, International Solidarity for the Protection of Dokdo opened the Dokdo Academy in April 2007 by gathering national interest and concern about Dokdo. This was to change the name "Takeshima" and "Sea of Japan" to Dokdo, and to cultivate a young generation with a strong will to defend Dokdo. In order to inform and publicize the historical truth and crisis of Dokdo, youth education should be given top priority. So by the end of July 2020, the number of young people who became the guardians of Dokdo through the Dokdo Academy is about 7,000. Young people armed with logic about the historical truth about Dokdo are taking the lead in neutralizing Japan's greed for territory and distortion of history by playing an active role in various fields abroad.
The educational philosophy of this academy is 'intellectuality to practice'. The goal is to make them logically armed with the sovereignty over Dokdo, so that the world knows that Dokdo is Korea's territory. In the meantime, the Dokdo Academy has been training for editors and reporters of university newspapers, and students attending Teachers' College. This is to focus on education about Dokdo to pre-service teachers who should teach the reality of Dokdo and sovereignty over Dokdo in the future. This is a way to provide young people with the right information about Dokdo.
The Dokdo Academy is conducting a four-week program to receive training on Dokdo issues and to visit Dokdo. The curriculum is very diverse. Participants learn about the process of the destruction of the Korean Empire, Japan's strategy of invasion of Dokdo, the strategic value of Dokdo, and the composition of marine forces surrounding the Korean peninsula. They engrave these contents in their minds and build up the logic necessary to protect Dokdo. The international legal basis of the sovereignty over Dokdo is also explored with others. In addition, we discuss how Dokdo is described in maps and books published in each country, how to respond to it, and the Japanese government's Takeshima PR strategy. Those who have completed these theoretical education are entitled to visit and train Dokdo. When participants visit Dokdo, they will have a willingness to defend Dokdo and become aware of Japan's territorial invasion. In short, the Dokdo Academy is an educational program that combines theory and practice.
In particular, the guardians of Dokdo collected errors in foreign books and atlas in domestic university libraries described as Takeshima or the Sea of Japan for the past 13 years. So we made the result of correcting the wrong content, replacing or returning publications. This is not limited to domestic activities. We carefully examined the status of the name ‘Dokdo’ in the books of universities and public libraries such as Stanford University, UCLA, Harvard University, Yale University, MIT, Boston University, New York University, UC Berkeley University, and Toronto University. At that time, foreign students recognized the sovereignty over Dokdo through the Dokdo Academy and strongly protested as Koreans to their universities. So they found a way to keep a book described in the name of Dokdo instead of Takeshima. That is when we started an international campaign to say, "Let's delete the name Takeshima, which Japan has written in publications of each country for more than 100 years."
with the meaning and vision of protecting Dokdo
The Japanese government denies the sovereignty of the Republic of Korea over Dokdo. They are constantly trying to invade Dokdo. In this case, civic groups should actively respond to the problem of describing Dokdo correctly and the issue of Dokdo education and history education for youth. We were sorry to hear the results of an official approval of a Japanese middle school textbook with distorted history. Therefore, we try to correct the fact that Dokdo and the East Sea are misrepresented, and we will try to construct the contents of education more faithfully. In addition, each university will adopt the contents of sovereignty over Dokdo as a subject, and will continue the campaign so that many young people have the opportunity to learn about Dokdo Dominium.
Even now, our government is responding in various ways to Japan's attempts to invade its territory. But now, civilian diplomacy at the civic level should be done at the same time. If we recognize the reason why Dokdo is historically and geographically Korean territory, the strategic value of Dokdo, and what we should do to protect Dokdo, Japan will surrender to us someday. The day must come when the Dokdo National Solidarity and Dokdo Academy are not needed more. Dokdo Dominium is a national agenda and a national concern. It is the desire and will of the people of the Republic of Korea. It is time to pay attention to future generations who are determined to protect the present and future of Dokdo.
