The featured jar was excavated in 1988 from the earthen fortress called Mongchon toseong in Seoul. The 59-centimeter-tall jar is one of the most common types of earthenware from the ancient Korean kingdom of Koguryo. Characteristics distinctive to this type of pottery include the long neck that flares at the rim and the four band-shaped lugs.
This type of pottery has mainly been uncovered from tombs rather than at sites of ancient residences, which indicates that such jars were produced and used for burials or ceremonies. The ‘#’ shape mark on the jar’s front is often considered in the East to have been carved for the purpose of driving away evil spirits.
