Academic conference held on “Shedding New Light on the Chungju Goguryeo Monument”,
marking the 40th anniversary of the monument's discovery
The Foundation held the academic conference on “Shedding new light on Goguryeo Monument” on November 22 at a meeting room on the Foundation's 11th floor with the Society for Korean Ancient History, marking the 40th anniversary of the monument's discovery. The monument was discovered in 1979 in Chungju of Chungcheongbuk-do Province, and is now preserved in the Exhibit Hall for the Chungju Goguryeo Monument. The monument, on which the state name of “Goryeo” and Goguryeo's official ranks and offices such as “Daesaja” and “Daehyeong” are inscribed, was designated as National Treasure No. 205 for its value in being recognized as the only stone monument of Goguryeo on the Korean Peninsula. The academic conference deciphered the inscription on the monument again through scientific research on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the monument discovery, and shed new light on the historical features of when the monument was built. There were also presentations on how the monument was deciphered along with its contents, date of establishment, and production background and purposes.
