Pungdo, an island of maple trees that overlooked our modern and contemporary history
Pungdo(meaning “an island of maple trees” in Korean) is an island located in Pungdo-dong, Danwon-gu, Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do. The island, known as a paradise of wildflowers, is popular among visitors and is also a witness of major historical events for being located on the sea lane.
The Battle of Pungdo, the first battle of the First Sino-Japanese War, took place on July 25, 1894, on the southwest seas of Pungdo. The island witnessed the arrival of 42 US Navy vessels in Incheon on September 8, 1945, and the Battle of Incheon on September 15, 1950. Pungdo, the small and beautiful island off Asan Bay, holds our modern and contemporary history. It serves as a reminder for us to avoid repeating the tragic past.
