Although this region is now called Okinawa, it had been a sovereign state under the name of the Ryukyu Kingdom for 450 years. The Ryukyu Kingdom had been developing a unique culture under the co-management of Qing and Japan, and became the Ryukyu Domain by the Meiji government in 1872, then finally became subordinate to Japan by force as Okinawa Prefecture in 1879. These series of processes are called the “Ryukyu Shobun (Disposition of Ryukyu)” in Japan, and the term indicates Japan’s one-sided and forcible imperialistic viewpoint. The photo shows Matsuda Michiyuki (center in front row), who led soldiers and police to occupy Ryukyu, with his entourage.
