The Perception of the World on Joseon during the United States-Korea War of 1871

신미양요 당시 세계의 조선 인식


The United States-Korea War 1871(the Shinmiyangyo) is an armed conflict that occurred during the US entering Ganghwa Island to sign the Treaty of Peace, Amity, Commerce and Navigation with Korea. About 60 nine-inch shells fired from the warship Monocachy of the United States Pacific Fleet for an hour devastated the Gwangsugbo in Ganghwa Island. About 350 Korean soldiers were killed in the pouring shells. This is the modern image experienced by Joseon during the feudal era on June 11, 1871. As a result, the United States-Korea War of 1871 asked the statesmans of Joseon. “Can you take responsibility for the lives and safety of the people? What else should you do?”
