The Lady of the Susan-ri Mural Tomb on a Splendid Outing

Of the murals in the Susan-ri Mural Tomb, the one with the best-preserved features is on the western wall of the burial chamber. It includes portrayals of the master and the lady of the tomb going on an outing and watching a circus. Walking beside the couple are servants holding a san-gae (傘蓋: a tool used as a sunshade for ancient aristocrats on an outing: today's equivalent of a parasol) for them. And covering the rest of the wall are a horse and marching warriors. The master and the lady of the tomb and their family members are portrayed as wearing a variety of clothes, which are very important sources for the study of Koguryo's costume. It is the lady of the tomb that stands out the most in the line of people featured on the western wall mural. The portrayal of the elegant figure of the lady with a chubby face wearing rouge and a good body proportion is a reflection of the high quality of Koguryo's paintings at the time.
